I definitely think the SLC would have been a better choice, it's just a shame it costs more than 3x as much! The computer is completely usable, and being able to walk into Starbucks (as an example) and just open the lid and go NOW is HUGELY better than opening the lid, hitting the power button, and waiting over a minute for the thing to boot. And the same can be said for just shutting the lid, and tossing it into the carrying pouch I have for it. I KNOW it will stop generating heat when I close that lid, I don't have to wait 20-30 seconds to make sure it actually powered down. So while the pauses can slow things down a bit, I save that much and more with the sleep working. But like I said, having the SLC SSD would be the cat's meow, I'd have the best of both worlds. |

What are the possible ramifications when turning it off? Thanks AR aka. loonix --------------------------------------------------- Dell 9 mini - OSX (Type 11 method) 10.5.6 | |

If you didn't click shutdown before powering off/crashing, the file system can misplace data blocks. Upon booting back up, the OS will see that it didn't dismount cleanly and it will run a checkdisk. This will extend the bootup time on the initial bootup after a crash a little bit, maybe 10-30 seconds, while it scans for any lost blocks and fixes them. It doesn't ALWAYS lose data, but there's always a risk that it could. It worked fine for years, Linux didn't have a journalling file system for a very long time before they finally added a dozen of them (roughly). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journaling_file_system That would be a good link for some more detailed info about what journalling is. I think the SSD will live longer with it turned off anyways. |

Also maybe the reason my cd would not boot is you had usb legacy support off? Not sure worked fine for me. I have a new iso with some new stuff I hope to test and get up tonight. I alos agree and would say this drive is about 15-20% slower just overall than my 16GB STEC what do you think UNA? |

I'm glad to hear yours sleeps as well, that means the probably is 100% isolated to the SSD now. ![]() |

| Guru Posts: 1,744 Join Date: Sep 2008 Location: Olalla, WA | Seems that sound is not working after waking up. May be the drivers I'm using, seems like there are about 3 different sound drivers out there. I hadn't noticed this before because I don't do a whole lot sound related on this machine. But I recently started installing some games on it, and noticed the problem. Anyone else with sleep working having the same problem? Or more importantly, not having it? ![]() |
