Lightbulb Silverlight 2.0 and Dell MiniMac SOLVED - 02-16-2009, 11:00 PM

See mechdrew's post three down from here for a very easy fix to this.

Installed OSX and updated to 10.5.6 and everything is working great. Just one minor issue. I thought I would try netflix streaming so I have to install Silverlight 2.0. Downloaded and ran the installer but it comes up and says that Silverlight 2.0 cannot install on a PowerPC.

So any idea why it thinks my atom based system is a powerpc based one? i did install the AboutMyMac (?) to make the about information say it is an atom. Maybe there is something that this package set wrong or missed?

This is all very new to me, I am an old time unix and mswin user so OSX is a great new toy. Thanks to all that have done such an amazing job getting it to run on the dell mini 9.

I noticed the same thing myself. I have no idea why it thinks our atom is powerpc but I just used the application pacifist to install it and it works fine.

Open the disk image you downloaded, copy the installer package to your desktop or some other folder (you have to do this or else you can't delete a file like you will need to later on). Then right click and select "Show Package Contents". Open "Contents" then "Resources" and finally delete the "InstallationCheck" file. Close all of those windows and then double click the installer package as usual. Install goes as normal. No sketchy "patched" version required.

Nintendoguy is right, it doesn't actually detect a PPC processor, it's just a standard error message for when it doesn't detect one of the official Intel processors.

Thanks mechdrew that worked like a charm. Have to remember that one in case of future issues like this.

Hello,
I just got my sweet mini9 Hackintosh set up and I'm ironing out some kinks, I'd like to say thanks to everyone for such a great community here! Unfortunately I've run into a snag installing Silverlight that I can't find in the forums - when I follow the above instructions and attempt to delete the InstallationCheck file, I keep getting:

"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -61)"

From what I can tell this is a permissions error and under the Get Info tab, I have R/W permissions until the Resources folder, where all the files are read only. I've searched and attempted some command line fixes to change permission or delete the file, but nothing seems to be working although I'll admit that I'm not much of a terminal user, so I might be doing something wrong in this process.

Did Microsoft lock this down just recently? Is there another way to change permissions or delete this file? Has anyone else had this issue yet?

Thanks in advance.

For some reason the silverlight package mounts as readonly.

Here is what I did to fix it:
at the console go to the directory where the silverlight .dmg file resides and run these 2 commands:

sudo hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o Silverlight.2.0.rw.dmg Silverlight.2.0.dmg

sudo hdiutil mount Silverlight.2.0.rw.dmg -readwrite

This will open the package file in the GUI. Once this happens you can use the steps mechdrew outlines.

Good luck!

You skipped the step where he said you copy the install package out of the disk image. After you mount the silverlight disk image, you need to drag the install package to your desktop. THEN you can get into it and delete components.

Ah classic....I see where I skipped that step and made the error. I didn't copy it out of the DMG file. I'm still learning what you can and cannot do in OS X.

Well I at least got to understand some of the OS X underpinnings and figured out a far more complex way of doing it than needed.

I just got through installing Silverlight on my Dell Mac mini 9 & watching Revolver on Netflix.
It started off great but stopped about 2/3 of the way through telling me that my internet connection had slowed & it was adjusting my settings. The rest of the movie played fine after that one delay.
