In a bind? Use a USB-to-IDE and old CD/DVD-ROM drive! - 02-07-2009, 12:20 AM
Not sure if this has been posted already, but...
So I got my new Mini last night and saw that after I installed all the Windows Updates, XP was now using 7.3GB of my 8GB SSD. I planned on slimming down the XP install using nLite, but needed access to an external USB CD/DVD drive which I don't have. But what I did have were some older, regular IDE CD/DVD-ROM drives lying around (like most of us do) and I also happened to have a USB-to-IDE adapter (specifically this one):
I hooked it all up and VOILA! I was able to boot off that drive and run Acronis to backup my existing XP install )onto an external USB hard drive also attached to the MINI).
I got my Vantec USB-to-IDE adapter for $30 from Fry's about a year ago and it has come in handy more than once. A definite must-have for a PC enthusiast's toolbox. Now I don't need to shell out $85 for a USB CD/DVD-ROM drive.

That's cool. I saw a video online of someone using one of these on their Mini, attached to a CD/DVD drive. I looked around for one, but couldn't find any (at the time). Oh well, I ended up buying a LG Slimline drive, and it works great.
