Default Need advice about a graphics card - 11-08-2010, 07:23 PM

I've got a HP Pavilion 6127 Desktop PC with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card, and I'm looking to upgrade, I've got my eye on an ATI Radeon HD 5970, but I don't know if it will fit in my tower, any advice or recommendations?

specs:
  • PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
  • 650 Watt or greater power supply one 75W 6-pin and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (850 Watt with two 75W 6-pin and two 150W 8-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
  • Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to AMD Certified Power Supplies for a list of certified products
  • Minimum 1GB of system memory
  • Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
  • DVD playback requires DVD drive
  • Blu-ray™ playback requires Blu-ray drive
  • For an ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 5970 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card (included) are required

you do know that card starts at around $500 at the cheapest..it should physically fit but check the above specs to see if your machine meets the other specs like an 850watt power supply, thats a lot of wattage, and check to make sure your motherboard will handle an 850watt power supply without frying it

Definitely got some of that stuff, my PC has the following:

4GB RAM
Blu-Ray Drive

No idea about the following:
  • PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
  • 650 Watt or greater power supply one 75W 6-pin and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (850 Watt with two 75W 6-pin and two 150W 8-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)

Even if the card fits, I really doubt your power supply has the connectors or juice to drive such a beast. But you could pop the side off the computer and see what's there.

I think that video card might be ok for someone who is building a system from scratch, but I would never put a $500-$600 video card in to some emachines or dell or even an HP that I bought off the shelf for a few hundred bucks, they will never handle it and I guarantee it will not have no 850watt power supply in it most of them are around 450watt or so, in my opinion and thats all it is... is my opinion... I would forget about that card..

PS. Not to mention the fact that this is a Dell MINI forum......not a PC forum and this entire thread has NOTHING to do with a Mini and he doesnt even have a Dell PC its an HP to boot

I am closing this thread......
