Regarding the problem that I was having earlier with my SDHC card, the data must have been corrupted, causing it to not mount properly. Disk Utility was able to see the disk, but was unable to repair it. I ran Disk Warrior to return normal functionality (but some of the data was lost). I later had problems with it mounting properly again, so I formatted the drive and everything seemed to be ok. Perhaps it was a poor idea to have the SD card inside the slot while I updated to v7.7?

You might want to see if Disk Utility sees the disk, Sneaky. I believe you were having a similar problem.
