Arrow *OLD* NetbookInstaller 0.8.4pre - 03-11-2010, 05:34 AM

This version of NetbookInstaller is outdated. Please see this thread regarding NBI .8.3 Final.

******************************************

NetbookBootMaker / NetbookInstaller .8.4 pre is now available and has been posted on the Google Code project page.
*WARNING* This version of NBI does not support versions of OSX older than Snow Leopard (10.6).

Please keep in mind that "pre" builds are still in development and are under a lot of testing. This release will add support and fix issues, but you should be aware that there is always a possibility for unexpected problems (always keep a backup handy, just in case! ) This version, like all non-final releases of NBI, has not been through any thorough testing and you may encounter bugs! Beware, this is under the development forums for a reason.

Installation Instructions :
  1. Restore OSX 10.6 DVD to USB drive
  2. Run NetbookBootMaker (this version) to patch the USB
  3. Make sure Legacy USB is enabled in BIOS (for booting from USB)
  4. Boot Mini (9 or 10v) to patched Install USB [note, if "pinwheel of death" appears... wait up to 10 minutes. if not, reboot to USB]
  5. Install OSX 10.6.x or upgrade from 10.5.x to 10.6
  6. Once the installation has completed remove your USB drive and reboot
  7. Enjoy OSX on your Mini!
[let me remind you that it is always a good idea to check/repair permissions after any OS upgrade. you can do this with Disk Utility or applications such as OnyX]

Upgrade Instructions :
  1. Download the NetbookInstaller .8.4pre
  2. Run NBI .8.4pre using the options you prefer
  3. Reboot your Mini
As of .8.4pre, NBI runs automatically when necessary (at least with OSX 10.6.1 - 10.6.3).

[for more detailed installation instructions for those who are not simply updating their current OSX installation... please see Mechdrew's site (link in my signature -- replacing any links to NetbookInstaller/NetbookBootMaker with the version you wish to use)]

This new version of NetbookInstaller includes the following changes:

See meklort's blog or the Google Code Project Page for now. Will update this section when meklort has a solidified changelog available.

**
Please see Meklort's Blog for further information and details!!**

Other Thoughts :

Remember to report any and all bugs you encounter to the Google Code bug tracker. This allows us to track issues with NetbookInstaller and keep up on fixing any bugs.

(It is extremely hard to remember bugs reported on the forums and is nearly impossible to keep up with all of the discussions. The forums are a great place to discuss problems and talk with other members about possible fixes, but you should always submit a bug report so that your issues are no overlooked)

Also, all discussions relating to .8.4pre belong in the Development section of the forums until further notice.

Finally, remember to support your developers for their hard work and time invested into the project

Enjoy!!

*WARNING*

As stated above, this is a pre-release / non-final version of NBI. Please use at your own risk and always ensure you have a backup. Nobody is responsible for problems during installation and upgrade except for you, the user. This version is in testing and under development!! (which is why it is in the dev forums) If you download and install this version please report bugs and problems to the bug tracker. There are known bugs that are being worked out, so do not expect everything to be perfect.

One known bug is no lid sleeping when running OSX 10.6.3 (not officially available yet). I have a feeling that this will affect a good number of people. Meklort is already working on a fix that he hopes will be ready by this weekend.

Looks like there is a slight (cosmetic) bug in this version. I reversed a test case and not the boot logo shows the NBI logo all of the time *except* when the auto patching is running (aka, it's backwards). I'll upload a new version tomorrow with it fixed.
Edit: should be fixed.

Meklort: Been reading a lot over the past week or so, and I'm amazed by how pro-active and succesful you've been! You've helped out an awful lot of people, and I at least, appreciate it.

I'm awaiting delivery of my 10v (along with a Crucial 2gb stick and Seagate 500gb HDD). I have already prepped my SL Install USB disk with NBM 0.8.3 in readiness... Should I now go and re-restore it using the latest 0.8.4pre?

I understand the changes to NBI, but I don't fully understand the following regarding NBM...

NetbookBootMaker no longer patches the install dvd, instead it installs a kext to patch the dvd at runtime (like NetbookCD). This means you'll probably want to restore the install dvd (this won't be required in the future since the dvd isn't modified anymore).

Is it in my interests to redo it using 0.8.4pre, over what I already have?

I'm using a retail SL disk, an external WD USB drive, with Disk Utility on a Mac.

Thanks.

It isn't necessary, but it's a good idea due to the changes form 0.8.3 to 0.8.4. This just limits the possibility for errors. Again, due to the 0.8.4 change, you'll never have to do it again.

UPDATE2: Looks like I broke another cometic thing, reuploading now.

As meklort states in the change log, if you already have a patched OSX install USB it is recommended to format and start clean since there are changes made in the NBM patch process

And to answer the questions about dual-boot support... yes, this version makes dual-booting with Windows smoother because it prevents files from being overwritten (simplified explanation)
