Default Working Mic on Dell Mini 9 - 12-21-2009, 11:17 PM

Very pleased with RC5 - but a working mic is important for me ... happily dropping the AppleHDA.kext into the /Extra/Mini9Ext folder and UpdateExtra got it working again the same way as in RC4. So RC5 + this small mod and I have my essential features working.

Notes:
(1) I had to delete the existing AppleHDA.kext and it did not seem to work if placed in /Extra/AdditionalExtensions which surprised me.
(2) The AppleHDA kext came from the first post here, Sound and mic working with AppleHDA - the only action taken is to take the AppleHDA.kext fine from the ALC268.kext.zip file and put that into the Mini9Ext folder - thanks to the very excellent thread http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/mac-...tml#post121641 for the original link to the RC4 fix!
(3) Hopefully Meklorts Christmas Day release (thank you Santa and Meklort!!!) should fix this so the workaround for the Mini 9 won't be necessary.

Kudos and appreciation for the hard work as always

Tx.

You guys with 10v's and no sound....did you do this?

1. Run NBI 8.3rc5
2. Reboot
3. Update to 10.6.2 via software update and reboot. (You will have no sound at this point)
4. Place any additional kexts in "AdditionalExtensions" folder located at /Extra/AdditionalExtensions (if applicable...i.e. VoodooPowerMini for speedstep)
5. Run UpdateExtra located at /Extra
6. Reboot (you should have full sound now).

If you were already on 10.6.2 prior to running RC5. I'm wondering if RC4 followed by RC5 has anything to do with your sound problems?

in my case

- i was on 10.6.1, installed RC4, installed 10.6.2, reboot
- boot failed, waited for RC5, booted into safe mode, ran RC5 and system booted fine
- no sound at this point, ran RC5 again, reboot
- boot failed again, booted in safe mode, ran RC5 again and system booted fine again

That's exactly what I do. Installing Chameleon apparently wipes out the special bootloader EasyBCD installs. No big deal to put it back, as long as I don't have to do this often.

I assume you ran RC4 prior to the release of RC5...that would be the ONLY reason to do it.

I haven't been reading every post in this thread so I'm going to assume your telling me that you can now boot since running RC5 in safe mode, but still do not have sound. So have you run UpdateExtra yet? That's the last step that I listed above.

It also helps to have your specifications in your sig, because there are separate working issues with the Mini 9.

I'm pretty confident that running UpdateExtra will fix your sound issues. If it doesn't I'm inclined to think that there is some conflict with running RC5 over RC4.

Are there additional kexts I need to put in "AdditionalExtensions" folder? I did try running UpdateExtra (although without adding any additional extensions). Result was the missing os symbol on boot (circle with slash through it over the Apple logo). Then had to reboot in safe mode and run RC5 again to get a proper boot.

As for your other question, I was on 10.6.1 under RC3 > RC4 (without the dstl file check) with no problems. Problems started when I ran RC5 without updating from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2. Actually had problems getting normal 10.6.1 boot under RC5, so reinstalled 10.6.0 then updated to 6.2, ran RC5 in safe mode and that's where I am now. Everything seems to work, except sound. "No devices found" is error message in the "output" and "input" tabs of the Sound pref pane.

I may just have to reformat drive and do a clean SL install and update to 10.6.2, but reluctant to start over again right now. Would like an easier solution if it exists. Thanks for your help!

Thumbs up Thanks...works!! - 12-22-2009, 01:10 AM

Thank-you for all of your efforts! They are very much appreciated. I purchased a barely used mini 10v yesterday, installed SL 6, and everything just worked. Today, I used the Software Update to upgrade to SL 6.2, ran your NetbookInstaller .8.3 RC5 again and everything is just working beautifully! I'm really impressed. I've been a Mac user since the Mac Plus was released, and recently replaced a failing black Macbook, with a 15" Macbook Pro. I love that machine, but travel most of the year, and was so afraid of the aluminum construction getting banged, dented, etc, I was looking for a used, plastic Macbook to take on my trips when I came across the work done here, searched Craigs list and beyond belief found an immaculate mini for very little $, and said, what the heck, I'll give it a try, and if it doesn't work, I'll put Win 7 on it. Since I can no longer use my black Mac, and I had just purchased SL for it, I used that disk on the mini so even though this Mac's a hack, it's a semi-legitimate one. I can use my Macbook Pro when I'm home, and when traveling, not miss a beat!
