Default Wireless TV tuner? - 11-10-2009, 02:28 PM

When I was in the process of shopping for netbooks, I noticed they were being sold with TV tuners. I am a long time gadget-freak, and I've been using TV tuners on my desktop machines for years........but the concept of buying a TV tuner for a mobile device kinda baffles me. They stopped broadcasting over the air, so that kind of functionality would be useless. Assuming you wanted to connect the tuner into a coax socket in your home (or directly to a STB), it would eliminate the mobile-aspect of the netbook since you are now physically tethered by the cable. Ideally, you'd like to be able to watch TV on the netbook from your front porch (or something) right?

Since I already have a TV tuner in one of my desktops, my solution is to simply stream it over the wireless network using "windows media encoder". I can take my Mini 10v outside, and watch TV from my hammock 100 feet from my house in the back yard. The video looks awesome. I think the only disadvantage is that I have to walk inside the house to change channels (or put the STB in a window and carry the remote with me).

....at any rate, are there any true wireless TV tuner solutions for netbooks nowadays, or is what I'm doing as good as it gets? - or am I totally off base, and the devices sold with netbooks already wireless?

Where do you live that they stopped broadcasting OTA? Broadcasters changed to *digital* signaling in the US, which is still OTA, but requires a special tuner for older, analog televisions.

OK - after doing a bit more research........ the ATSC "OTA" stations here look pretty grim....

We have three local TV channels (only good for local news, weather, and football games....also serve CBS, ABC, and NBC)

3 crappy syndicated (Warner Bros., United Paramount Network, and Fox......football, golf, baseball....mostly reruns of sitcoms)

1 Home shopping

1 public television (Seasame Street, Teletubbies, Masterpiece theater)

10 Jesus channels (do people other than serial killers even watch those?)

what's your address and i'll tell you.

actually, i'm a pastor and i don't like many of them either. you don't have to like "jesus channels" either, but the inference that Christians are serial killers goes beyond insult or evidence, especially if you knew how many Christians around the world are being murdered and presecuted DAILY -- just for being Christian.

perhaps you'd like to think on other religions in the news?

Just to take a slight detour from the tech-oriented topics for a second.......I don't mean to be offensive at all (sorry about that)

I dunno man -- we're not talking "all Christians" here. We're talking whats on TV.......hours of scary evangelical weirdness with people speaking in tongues, "healing" the sick, and trying break cinder blocks over their heads. Hours of guys preaching sermons in this weird rhythmic monotone way where they repeat suggestive phrases over and over again. By no means a noteworthy presentation of all the post-schism sub-branches, but these guys have definitely gone waaaaaaay off in left field somewhere. You have to wonder about the mindset of the target audience.
