In regards to the VM - I need it for testing web pages I develop in IE + I use quickbooks. dual-booting ins't really a viable option. 2GB of RAM with a 1.6GHz processor *should* be plenty to run a VM, and actually I have the VMWare fusion install of a stripped-down XP running pretty well. Fairly snappy, and definitely suits my purpose. The downside is that I have to buy a VMware fusion license and I already had one for parallels. Adds to the cost of what's intended to be an ultra-low-cost setup. In regards to the "rumor" of 10.6.2 disabling support for the Atom processor, do you have a credible source saying that it's NOT true? The reason I wrote the review is because I wanted to give folks (like myself two weeks ago) a realistic idea of what the 10v is. I was very excited to get it and start setting it up, but I had misguided notions about what the computer is/would be. In my OPINION the total cost of everything doesn't merit its ACTUAL usefulness. again, just my OPINION. | |

The rumor about 10.6.2 has been shattered. Credible source, you ask?! Check TUAW, Engadget (this is the original article) On top of this, I had already inferred that 10.6.2 would be possible anyhow if the kernel would not have been compatible, meklort had the "incompatible" version running on his Minis fine with a patched kernel (using the 10.6.1 kernel). 2. How can you complain about having to pay extra for software?! That is ridiculous. You buy a low-cost netbook and then expect to run a virtual machine and complain because you have to buy additional software?! If you want free, then check out VirtualBox. If Parrallels, which you already own, does not work... then tough luck, sorry about that I have always preferred VMWare Fusion and you should not include your specific problems in a "general review" to give others an idea of what to expect. Overall, everyone is entitled to their opinion and nobody is saying that you cannot express your feelings about a poor experience. I just personally think you went into this whole purchase with too high of expectations. As for the screen, if you wanted an HD display then you would need to sacrifice the ability (because of incompatible hardware) and run a Mini 10 (which you already mentioned). If you were unaware, the 10v is supposed to be for "value"... hence the "v" in the model name. This is also why there is no HDMI out and other options such as TV tuner, GPS, etc. The color profiles and the trackpad are both fixed, in my opinion. The color profile I use looks good, for a netbook, and the trackpad works great with the latest driver in .8.3RC3. I agree that the 1Gb RAM upgrade is a pain, but I did it for experience and fun... and I definitely did not need the additional RAM. I monitor my RAM usage and hardly ever go over 1Gb, if ever. As for the harddrive, that is not very difficult. Meklort's Blog | NBI Google Code Page | osx.mechdrew.com -- the best OSX installation guides |

Your buying a machine that doesn't have the capabilites for what you want of it and bashing it for it. Why don't you crap on Apple for not making their OS more universal vs a light computing device that does a better job than about any other PC. Total cost does merit, $220 from Outlet, you don't need to upgrade the hard drive, and $30 for 2gig module, $29 for SL disc. Hmmm, under $300 vs WTF ever a Mac costs. D:\duo\320GBHD\2GBRAM\W8DP |

The fact that you guys are so belligerently defensive says something about your fanatic fandom. I can't believe flaming is still something that is practiced. Again the WHOLE REASON of writing the review was to give others who are researching the 10v an opinion other than the blown sunshine you read about the computer on this site. |

Wow, what a great write up! ![]() People like you keep flaming alive my friend. I don't own a Mac, don't know squat about Macs, nor will ever buy a Mac. But I have a 10V right here I bought to make a Hacintosh, I'm not expecting it to load right up or go as easy as a Windows install, but I do expect to have it fully functional and expect an excellent compromise in price and functionality just to familiarize myself with OS X. I've owned other netbooks and the mini 10V is the nicest I've used. The keyboard is just big enough (and I have huge hands), the screen outstanding, and the fit and finish are great for a low-end investment. I bought the MacBook Pro because I wanted a power laptop but the 10v is more than enough for light work. MacBook Pro was more than 5X the cost of the 10v with software but it's *not* 5 times better. I also built a dual boot Win7 64 bit/OSX desktop a few months ago but it has great performance because I have around $1000 (including monitor) invested in that. You definitely get what you pay for and expecting the 10v to perform as well as a MacBook is a little unrealistic. |
