It is not like them to specifically pinpoint non-Apple hardware... but the Dell Minis running OSX have become extremely popular. Look all over the web

Apple has obviously noticed this and may attempt to bring it to a halt... who knows?!

Appleinsider have just posted the same news

Apple rumored to disable Atom support with Mac OS X 10.6.2

[snippet]In the non-commercial world of "Hackintosh" systems, some users were able to install Snow Leopard on inexpensive netbook computers, like the Dell Mini 10v. Launched in 2008, the Intel Atom processor is intended for sub-notebooks and ultra-mobile PCs.[/snippet]

Gotta love the cyclical references on the web...

A refs B refs C refs A == 4 references == truth!

Basically the only fact we have is that 10.6.2 crashes on at least the Atom. All the rest is suppositions and references to suppositions.

They can't remove GMA950 though, can they? Wouldn't they be killing some MacBooks?

And I have no idea how I'd use the 10.6.1 kernel in 10.6.2, is there a command in terminal for that?

If you really believe that Apple can't, or won't, break support for the Atom/950 combo, you're probably being a little naive. Apple has displayed quite a willingness to go cat-and-mouse when it comes to 'outside' hardware. Just look at Palm's efforts to keep the Pre syncing. I'm not a kernel or OS expert, but I would be willing to believe that Apple could find a way if they wanted to.

I know it's a little less than ideal.. But why not use the Voodoo kernels, like the AMD guys have to do?
One thing many people aren't aware of, is that the Kernel for OSX is open source.. So there's only so much Apple can do to lock it down, simply because worst case, we can compile our own kernel. And with this great automated installer system we have for the Mini9, swapping out the kernel would really be no big deal..

It is definitely not a rumor that 10.6.2 breaks support for the Atom... as this has been tested and confirmed.

But it definitely is a rumor that this will halt "Hackintoshes" and Minis running OSX. As others have mentioned, the kernel for OSX is open and able to be replaced. I am sure there will be a solution to this problem in time... and it will not hurt anyone to continue running OSX 10.6.1, will it?

Also, it is unclear whether Apple was intentionally doing this to target the "netbook crowd"... although it seems as if that would be the case.

Rumors rumors rumors. Part true, part false.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this update is coming right before we're gonna be due for a Macbook Pro refresh with Core i5/i7 arch mobile chips. Apple is probably making changes to account for this and it happens to be breaking Atom.

I'm sure we'll quickly find a workaround.
