Those people are probably doing fresh installs... meaning they need to create their OSX bootkey and patch it with NetbookBootMaker (and all of that jazz)

Since this is a Release Candidate I did not even cover those instructions because it recommended that only experienced members use the Release Candidates (meaning they should already be running OSX and simply be able to upgrade, using the instructions I posted).

If someone is doing a fresh install, they can refer to the .8.2a thread and follow the instructions I have posted... but the .8.3RCs will not cover those detailed instructions since it is recommended for those who have already been using OSX and are willing to test and post feedback.

Thanks! That definitely clears things up...

On another note...is the 10v slow boot problem with snow leopard being worked on? And, is this something that can be fixed with NBI?

Thanks again!

The reason that Snow Leopard is booting slowly has to do with NetbookInstaller and how it works on the 10v

Meklort is looking into it, but it is very difficult to track down the root cause... and it is not as simple as booting with the '-v' flad into verbose mode and redording where the hang-ups appear to occur.

That being said, I think that the boot time is bearable and it is nothing that should discourage you from using Snow Leopard.

Great info on .8.3 -- I just wanted to share my story and see if what people had to say.

I did a fresh install for the first time on my 10v last weekend. I used the .8.2 NBM method with Snow Leopard and got up and running with no issues at all. I upgraded to 10.6.1 and still didn't appear to have any issues. The next day, however, my system wouldn't boot past the grey screen with the apple logo. I though maybe this was due to not having run NetBookInstaller, so I went ahead and booted in safe mode and ran NBI .8.2. This seemed to allow me to boot reliably, however sound and camera were negatively affected.

Yesterday I ran NBI .8.3 and rebooted and this really improved things...that got me working with sound, nicer trackpad response, hard drive icon fix and a working camera. I went to bed thinking all was well with the world. This morning found that I was back to a similar booting issue. This time I made it through after a few repeated tries without having to boot in safe mode.

I haven't been playing with anything that I think would affect the machine like this -- as a first time Mac user I've really just been exploring the OS and the applications -- is this booting issue just something that people live with, or do you think I've done something wrong?

Configuration: Inspirion 10v, BIOS: A05, SnowLeopard 10.6.1, 16GB SSD, 1GB RAM, NBI .8.3RC

Thanks for your comments

I'm still on 10.5.7, but I've occasionally had the boot process hang at the gray apple screen. It's very rare, maybe 3-5% of the time, but it does happen. When I investigated others experience with this problem at the time, I got the general consensus that it's a typical issue.

I have that experience with my iMac, a computer that runs perfectly in every other way. About every 10th boot attempt the machine will hang with the gray screen and dark gray apple logo . . . no spinning gear. This has been happening since SL was installed on the machine. I wonder if this is an Apple problem, not a Mini problem

Just thinking . . . . .

Well, I was excited about snow leopard, but seriously, it's totally not worth the hassle for the mini. Nothing changed except the hackintosh stuff is not working well anymore.

Only thing changed thats better is the shutdown time...
