I will add my vote to open links in a new tab by default.

I agree that it is very easy to manually open a link in a new tab, but, the vast majority of the time I'm following a link, I'm not done with the thread. If that is the case for most people, it makes sense to make opening links in a new tab the default.

My two cents.
