Thumbs down Duplicate threads! - 11-15-2009, 05:03 PM

Hi,

In the Windows 7 Section, we seem to ended up with four consecutive threads all relating to virtually identical Webcam driver problems, which have now started to be answered in quadriplicate!

Is there any chance that one of the 'Mods' on here could amalgamate these please, as it is all starting to get a wee bit confusing!

Thanks!

Edit: Actually we even have one post on this subject (from the same Member) appearing in no less than seven separate threads... is this really necessary!

I cleaned this up a bit.

The same message was posted to several threads, all but one of which were quite old. I removed all but the newest, and edited it as well.

You can report posts (especially spam and fighting) by clicking the exclamation point on the upper right
side of the message. This alerts mods of the issue.

There are so many new posts, a few bad ones can easily slip through the cracks. Reporting them at least gives the mods a heads up.

This does seem to be causing more than a few problems at the moment unfortunately!

A new member with (say) a mobile broadband problem, on a new Mini 10v running Windows 7, sees a choice of five possible 'areas' in which he could post his query, namely Beginners Question, General Discussion, 3D Mobile Broadband Discussion, Dell Mini 10v Discussion, or Windows 7 Discussion... which one does he choose?

... and then if he is interested in OS X also... what then?

I am not trying to 'have a go' at anyone here, and think that this is a really great site, but I do wonder at times if it is trying just a bit too hard to be "all things to all people".

The 'hackintosh' fans are often not all that interested in straightforward Windows problems, (and vice versa!) and the Linux brigade are very enthusiastic also, which is all great.... but all this unfortunately makes it very hard at times to isolate the posts which are peculiar to your own particular area(s) of interest... and of course before you know where you are, you find duplicate requests, and answers ending up all over the place!

I am not even going to try and offer a solution, as I am sure that all the 'Mods' and Administrators are fully aware of what is going on, and do a sterling job in trying to keep things as tidy as possible, but we are where we are... and it is still a great site anyway!

Keep up the good work lads!

yeah I know exactly what you mean there are a lot of variables that come into play with some issues, which means they could potentially be posted in multiple categories.

I'm all for cutting down as much as possible, but because we cover such a broad range of topics (hardware, os's, and everything in between) its difficult to decide what should stay and what should go.

From another point of view I want to keep things like "mobile broadband discussion" as it provides good SEO and is a perfectly valid topic for Dell Mini discussion (my first mini is still on its original contract!)

If you have any suggestions, do put them forward!
