Question need help with os 10.5 install - 07-19-2009, 01:40 PM

hello all. i got my new dell mini 10 v and have tried installing os 10.5.3 on it several times. the os x disk i have is mine from an upgrade to a 15 inch macbook pro that was stolen from a break in at my house. its a standard dell mini the only thing i did get upgraded was the battery. everything else is factory. I've tried several boot loaders to try the install. and it installes great but when i try to start up my little dell it says os not found or your computer needs to be restarted. im using an external dvd for the boot disk and the factory os x disk. what am i doing wrong? any help I would be very thankful.

You need a retail version of OS X, not a grey apple disk that came with an Apple computer. Also, once you install the retail disc, you still need to run DellEFI so the mini knows how to boot up the OS X.

Best install method for the 10v is this one.

Functioning Hibernation

If it is a retail version, it should work fine, apple doesn't require serial numbers like MS, that is why we are at our word to make sure we are being legit (not installing to multiple computers). It is also the reason I was asking to confirm that you are using a retail version, not a grey upgrade disk, as you sometimes get when buying Hardware just as the OS changes.

If you have gotten the OS loaded and running, you need to run DellEFI to finalize the settings. Since this is a Dell PC, and not an Apple, it uses BIOS to boot up, where as a Mac has EFI. EFI starts up a Mac and checks everything out before loading the OS, if all is good, it gives you the start up chime. We load the DellEFI to basically trick the OS X to think it is running on an Apple machine, as well as to load the drivers, or kexts to make everything work properly. Wireless, graphics, etc.

I am sorry, but I don't have a 10v, so I can't be anymore precise about the installation methodology you should use. I have a Mini 9, and although much is the same, there is also much that is different.

As far as killing the OS on your stolen laptop, without actually having it in your possession to do so, I don't know of a way to.
