Default External Battery for mini 9? - 05-27-2009, 03:44 PM

Hi all:

I know there are aftermarket batteries for the mini 9, but they seem to be used with mix results. I'm traveling to Australia next month and my glifhr was originally on a plane that had laptop power at the seat. I guess they've downgraded our plane to a different model, and this one doesn't have power. So, I need to find an alternate way to keep the mini going. Other than buying 3 or 4 extra dell batteries (that would suck), has anyone used an external power supply or found a battery that can be plugged in through the DC plug? Any ideas?

I would expect that any of the external batteries that supply a Dell tip and 19V should work. The 8-cell batteries sold on eBay do work, if you don't mind covering the power LEDs with tape to block the flashing lights. You'll get 7 hours or so out of one of those, depending on what you're doing with it.

Thanks Holmes. So, that 8 cell battery should work even if I'm running OSX? There aren't any modifications that need to be made for it to work? Is that the battery that sticks out of the back of the mini and lifts it off the desk surface?

The battery doesn't care what OS you're using. As discussed in the threads about the extended battery, you may have difficulty charging while the Mini is powered on, and you may get a BIOS warning when you first power on, but it does work. Yes, the battery sticks out the back and bottom.
