Unhappy External USB Modem - 10-15-2008, 08:55 PM

I am in a rural area with only a local dialup ISP.
Could I use this, for example, with the Mini 9?
My thanks....

Model 3095 V.92 USB Mini External
Miniature 56K modem works with Windows, Mac, and Linux computers

The low-cost Model 3095 modem plugs into the USB port of any notebook or desktop computer. It's miniature design makes it ideal for travel or use in your office.

The Model 3095 is approximately the size of a disposable lighter. The modem’s short, integrated cable plugs directly into a computer USB port, and the other end of the modem connects to a phone jack through a standard phone cord. The standard phone cord is easy to replace if it’s lost or forgotten, a considerable advantage over the proprietary phone cords used with most PC Card modems.

The modem’s power is provided by the computer’s USB port, eliminating the need for a power adapter when traveling, and reducing power adapter clutter in the home or office.

An on-board digital signal processor and controller maximize system stability and performance. The Model 3095 provides a downstream data transmission rate of up to 56,000 bits per second (bps) and an upstream rate of up to 48,000 bps. All V.92/V.44 features are supported, including Quick Connect, Modem-On-Hold, and improved compression for the graphic content found on the Worldwide Web. Other advanced modem features include voice mail support, send and receive fax, and ZoomGuard advanced lightning protection.

Works with any desktop or laptop computer operating system that supports a USB port, including Windows, Macintosh and Linux
Small, compact design is ideal for both portable and desktop computer use
USB port powered to maximize portability and eliminate power adapter clutter
Controller-based design maximizes system stability
Browse the WEB at higher speed with V.44

Aslong as you don't require drivers that on a CD.

Please do not send me support requests via PM.

Also, depending on where you live and what your cellular coverage is in your area, you may be able to use a GSM or CDMA cellular modem (connects to USB port as well) to get much faster speed than a dialup, but it will also cost about 3 times as much. around $60 a month in the USA. The advantage of using a celluar modem is it will work if you travel to anwhere else that has good cell tower signal, across the whole country. It will also free up your home's voice line so you can surf the web for extended periods of time and still make or receive calls on the home land line.
