Default Mini9 > VGA Out > External Monitor/TV? - 11-30-2010, 05:05 PM

Can the VGA port on a Dellmini9 play videos on an external TV/Monitor?
Can I do this with an inexpensive VGA/HDMI cable?

I plan to do this with PuppyLinux as the OS - but I'd like to hear from anyone who has tried this, regardless of OS.

thanks

No you cannot. That particular cable goes the other way around, and I have serious doubts it works at all (both reviews say it doesn't work). You need a VGA to composite video converter (not a cable). I have one I bought for around $30 - it works, but the picture looks pretty bad.

You will see some VGA-to-composite (or S-Video) adapters or cables on the market, but these require that the PC put out a composite signal on one of the otherwise-unused VGA pins. The Minis don't do that.

It'll work in Linux with a TV/monitor that has a VGA input.

If your TV doesn't have a VGA input, then holmes is correct, you'll need an expensive convertor box (VGA to S-Video, VGA-to-composite, or whatever). I'm not aware of any cheap cable that'll work with the Mini 9.

That linked-to HDMI to VGA cable is a fraud. There is no way a simple cable can make that conversion. If a TV has VGA input, then of course a simple VGA cable will do the trick - no matter which OS you're running.
