Default Looking for an external cd/dvd drive to install XP from. - 02-22-2010, 04:18 PM

As the title suggests...I'm looking for an external cd drive to install a fresh copy of XP to my Mini 9. I've never bought an external cd drive, I'm not too sure what to look for and my worry is I'll buy something that only burns cds and doesn't read from them. I did look around for a while on the site but no one seems to be asking this quesiton...or I just missed it if they did. A link to some info or some personal accounts would be great!

Thanks
-Tim

Hi Tim, and welcome to the Forum!

This question has in fact been asked before... earlier in this section actually, so I hope you will find this thread of some interest: External DVD Drive

Dell themselves often have offers on these also, so it is worth checking out their website too!

Good Luck.

Personal preference would be a Lite-On had one a few years now when I first got my EEE PC

Read somewhere they use Sony internals but dont quote me on that

I use a Memorex myself and I choose to buy a 16X DVD double layer burner instead of a reader only or a single side burner. It costs a good bit more (about 100bucks); but it comes with burning software etc.

Also if you plan on experimenting with different OS's it will be invaluable in burning the ISO's to DVD's after downloading. Its a double layer burner so covers all your bases when it comes to anything you might need to burn in the future.

You can find them less expensive; but I have never been let down by this quality unit. fdalbor

I just bought a IDE/SATA to USB kit and used an internal drive from my desktop. $20 versus the $50 for the slim external one.

If you don't need it often and want to save the $30, it's an option, but not terribly convenient if you'll be using it reasonably often.

I bought a Liteon last week and its spot on, usb powered on board cable storage. I've burnt about 20 DVD's and a couple of CDR's whilst browsing and its never failed.

I paid £40 from maplin but you can buy it from here for £29.99 with free shipping...
