Default External Blu-Ray drive: can Dell Mini 9 handle it? - 02-03-2010, 05:06 PM

I have an external Blu-Ray drive (also burns/plays CD/DVD) that I'd like to use with my Dell Mini 9. It works fine as an external drive, but when I go to play Blu-Ray movies using PowerDVD (which came with the drive), I'm told my graphics card driver is incompatible. I upgraded to the latest, and it still won't work.

Is there any way to play a Blu-Ray disc on my Dell Mini 9? I'm not trying to play ripped movies, I have the discs legitimately, but I can't figure out how to make this work.

First off, welcome to the forums.

Secondly, Ha Ha Ha. No way.

No official player will even start up, because the Mini lacks the encryption required for Blu-Ray licensing.

An unofficial player (something like AnyDVD HD) would start up, but the modest Mini hardware will be overwhelmed by the task of decoding the video.

Blu-Ray requires that the VGA output be disabled, and the 945GSE chipset doesn't know how to do that. It's not "encryption", per se, that is the issue, but rather there is no "protected video path".

Not as far as I know. I believe the GMA3150 can, theoretically.

I don't think the new Mini 10 (1012) has a chance either. From what I've read the GMA3150 doesn't have much video decode ability, so it falls to the CPU. And you won't be decoding Blu-Rays on an Atom. I dunno about the GMA500 in the old 10.

The GMA3150 is better than the GMA950/500.
