I'm a total beginner - got a mini 9 with Ubuntu 8.04. Just received
my USB stick TV tuner with less than helpful paperwork. Do I need a driver? What application do I need to view TV, change channels etc?
Grateful for any advice. Should have waited and bought the mini 10
with integrated TV.

You will need a driver and application software. The tuner should have come with these. Does it claim to support Linux? Go visit the manufacturer's web site where you can at least get the driver.

Steve - I bought the TV tuner from Dell UK - minimal
documentation with it. Went to Dell UK website to
download the driver but it only gave me the options
of WindowsXP or BIOS as the operating system.

I emailed their support but absolutely no reply.
Not sure where to go now for drivers - don't even
know what application software I need to get.
Not kidding about being an absolute beginner here.

I've read that this is actually a Hauppauge product. What is the model number of the product? You won't find software for it under the Mini 9 section.

You could also try booting up synaptic package manager, and searching for a TV player. use keywords like "TV", "TV Tuner", "TV Capture card", the name of the TV card maker, etc.

EDIT -- did some homework for you. Here's a couple of players that might work. I know there's usually a bunch of optional ones in the repositories:

http://tvtime.sourceforge.net/
http://linux.bytesex.org/xawtv/

This will at least give you the player. A lot of times, Synaptics will magically fetch the extra drivers for you too if needed (a dialogue will pop up saying something like "The following packages were also added...yadda yadda version xxx.xxx")

....and on another note........ are you really attached to Hardy Heron?

I've now got the driver and found several tv applications
which I'm trying out - MeTV, XawTV etc. In the process
I discovered alot more about my mini9.
