Default Cool external drive for netbook - 12-03-2008, 11:49 PM

If you're going to bring one with you, this might be the one to get:

30GB or 60GB 4,200 rpm 1.8" hard drives in a very small package:

Depth 3.4 in
Height 0.2 in
Weight 2 oz
Width 2.3 in

Nice, but kind of pricey. There are some decent, small drives available for a lot less with more capacity. I bought a Simpletech mini expresso drive, 120g for under $70.00. It's light weight and fits in a pocket of the STM Drift bag I use for my Mini.

Well, that's no good at all!

Sure, its cheaper. And provides a lot more storage. And is faster.

But see, the other one is really tiny! Look again, see how tiny it is?

That's tiny!
I have to agree it's a little pricey for the capacity and speed 'tho. The size is definitely the selling point there.

If things keep going like they are however, I think 32gb flash drives are around the corner (a year or less?) from being a competitor, and then it's all over.

The cool part of THAT is that tiny hard drives with lower capacities will become (and are becoming) dirt cheap and still be just as useful!

EDIT
If you can handle the size increase, you could even get a 1-1/8" drive and a USB enclosure for it for a LOT less money.
I'm currently using an old 20gb 1-1/8" drive in that way and I agree it's a great thing to have some extra storage on the go.

Again, the only problem there is that I also have a 16gb flash drive that I can literally hang on my KEY RING with little fear!
(It's faster too!)

So yeah. I love this stuff too, but I think we're (almost, not quite) at the end of the days of being able to marvel over tiny hard drives.
Of course marveling over flash drives is also very very cool!

Yeah, good point.

Buffalo Shinobi 30GB ... $111.99
Corsair 32GB Flash (newegg) ... $69.99

Buffalo Sninobi 60GB ... $156.99
Kingston Technology DT150/64GB 64GB DataTraveler 150 USB 2.0 Flash Drive (amazon) ... $120.11

So I think the point has been passed already... Huh. Suspect the hard drive would be faster here in many applications, but if its just for media or to store an occasional backup, I'll take the lower price AND smaller size.
