Default External DVD Drive - 09-14-2009, 02:36 PM

does anyone have any good recommendations for an external DVD drive. i saw a few other threads about em, but they didnt really give me a ton of insight.
I want one for around $50. Im not going to be using it a ton, but I want to get one that I know is going to last and is easy to use. any suggestions?

This question comes up a lot and the recommendations are usually the same. Your $50 limit may give you difficulty, though. I see Newegg has a Samsung for $55 and an LG (the one I have) for $69. Either of these should be fine.

If you're only going to use it to load an operating system and have a spare internal drive from a desktop/tower, just get a $20 USB adapter.

If you are going to use it long term for playing DVDs and more, then you might want to spend a little more.

As of today, Fri Sept 18, Amazon has a sale on Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN (Gloss Black). It is $53.07 ("you save $21.92 29%") and has free standard shipping, but my experience is that you always pay your state tax. Just FYI.

Newegg has a sale on an external slim dvd ROM (not a burner, just a reader) for $29.99 and free shipping. Newegg.com - LITE-ON 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-ROM 200KB Max. Cache USB 2.0 Black Top Load External Slim DVD ROM Model eTDU108-96 - External CD / DVD Drives I have the same unit in white. It works great and weighs very little. It only needs one USB port for power since it's not a burner. I paid $45 and thought that was a bargain. $30 is really a bargain. This sale probably won't last long. I used mine to load Windows 7 and now to watch movies without the hassle of converting them.

I got the above DVD-ROM, for $35 shipped (including Acronis 2009).. They also sell a white version, if you like. I also loaded Win7, and it works just fine.

The burner is $50 right now.

with me, I am kinda anal about this but I want mine to match so I'd rather splurge the $99 and get the Dell external drive, it'll match the glossy blakc of my Mini 10, just my thing I guess...

The above Lite-On is a pretty damn good match for my glossy 10v. I'll get pictures at some point.

$50 extra seems beyond anal.

Red face Red might be a problem here..... - 10-06-2009, 05:02 AM

I didn't get the Dell external drive, thinking I could find a cheaper one elsewhere (or check out reviews and make sure I was getting a decent one), but I seriously doubt I'll find a Red Deal anywhere.
