Default Dual Boot XP install problem :( - 11-19-2010, 01:43 AM

I have a hackintoshed mini 10v that I am trying to set up as dual boot with winXP.

I have 3 partitions: OSX (130gb), Windows (25gb), and a common/swap partition (5 gb).

OSX is already successfully installed on the first partition, and I am trying to install XP on the windows partition.

So far, here is what I have done:
1. ripped the oem recover/reinstallation XP SP3 disc to 4gb flash drive with wintoflash (or something), booted with the flash drive to the installation menu
2. select #1, text mode setup - format the windows partition as NTFS, proceed with installation
3. select #2, GUI setup after reboot - weather the "hal.dll missing" error
4. select #2, GUI setup, after reboot - Windows starts to startup, flash to BSOD:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x861D4030, 0XC000014F, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

what next? thanks in advance.

I used this guide and everything worked flawlessly. He explains how to install dual boot if you already have OSX installed.

Thanks, but that is the guide I have been using.

Any other thoughts/ideas?

Well the quick and easy way would be to make a time machine backup of your current OSX setup. Reformat your partitions and put winxp in the 2nd partition (for some reason winxp does not like the 3rd partition) if you do this using your osx to format make three partitions as your not seing an EFI partition in the 1 slot also make the partitions MBR. Install winxp get it completely up and running. once you do put in your osx boot stick and choose to recover from time machine run NBI after it restores and you should be good to go.

Thanks, but SL won't install to MBR drives (not that I've been able to accomplish, anyway).

Currently, I can get either XP _OR_ SL installed and running correctly, but not both. I'm about to pull my hair out with this darn thing

Actually that is incorrect SL will install on MBR if it is a time machine back up I've done it myself. There is also a thread somewhere where you can modify the installation files on your USB stick to install on MBR.
