Default Chameleon only on usb? - 05-18-2010, 06:21 AM

I've been searching for this for a while with no success. So I figured I'll just post this query as a new thread.

Is there a way to have chameleon only on a usb stick?

I'm playing around with different dual and tripple boot scenarios, and although I have everything working, I think it would be useful to have a small usb drive, or an sd card (i have an old 128mb one that would be perfect for this), to use strictly to boot the system-- freeing up my larger usb drives.

Bump.

I installed UNR last night without thinking and now I've replaced Chameleon with Grub, which will not load OSX. If anyone can provide a bootable chameleon version I think that could solve my issues.

Thanks.

I ran into the same issue when i tried ubuntu. It's a fairly easy fix though, provided you still have your mac os x usb stick. Just start up the os x installer again, under utilities, run netbook installer, check install chameleon (and install 10v extensions). that will overwrite grub, and chameleon will recognise your other OS.

this is precisely the type of issue i would like to have Chameleon by itself on a usb stick. that way i wouldn't have to tie up a large usb drive with OS X.

cheers

If you install grub into the linux partition and then run NBI, chameleon will see the other OSs + grub.
HowTo here. If under "How To Re-install GRUB 2 From A Live CD", point 4, you set the end of the command "sudo grub-setup -d /media/disk/boot/grub /dev/sda" (this is an example, yours may look different!!!) to the Linux partition (e.g."/dev/sda5") it may complain about unsafe install, but applying a little "--force" will make it obey.
... Well, worked for me, and should work from an installed linux, too.

NBI on a stick.

it's been a long time since i started this thread, but it seems folks are still occasionally finding their way to it.

turns out this was always possible. I just never came across it before because i'm a Mac user, primarily, and the file needed is only referenced in the 'no mac' prepping instructions.

the file is here: NBI_084RC1.img.zip

use a program called Transmac to write it to USB. it's a small file, so a 1GB USB drive is plenty. I'm on a 10v, so I actually run it off of a 128 meg SD card.

in any case, all it is is the chameleon bootloader, plus some files that can only be accessed within the OSX installer. but it'll do in a pinch.

cheers.

note: while it works great when you use transmac,
i tried using Disk Utility on my Mac, and that DID NOT work.

i've been messing around with this, and it's not quite as all purpose as i'd like, it won't necessarily load OS X, but will boot Windows just fine at least.
