Default Ubuntu and WinXP Home - 04-19-2010, 04:40 AM

I wanted to dual boot my mini 9 with Ubuntu and Windows XP Home.
I have a mini9 with 1GB ram and a 16GB SSD.
I used the Ubuntu Live CD to partition the drive. I now have about 5.5GB for the Ubuntu partition and about 8GB free to install WinXP. I am using an external DVD drive and am able to boot from the WinXP cd. It runs through the process for about 5min and then about the time I expect to see optins for partition choices, formatting, etc. I instead get the following blue screen message...

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
"

I'm pretty sure there are no viruses. I couldn't say about the other stuff except for all the stuff Windows says it's doing when the installation process first begins (RAID controlleres, SCSI this and that, etc.)

I'm not a total novice as I've installed windows from the disc on multiple machines and have switched various hardware components on desktops.
However, this is my first attempt at setting up a dual boot machine and really hope someone out there has come across this problem before who can help.

Any assistance or advice is greatly appreciated.

I think the issue is that it would be better to install XP first, then Ubuntu.

With installing XP, delete all partitions first, then create one the size you want for XP and leave the rest alone.
Next install Ubuntu.

Here is one good guide: How to dual boot Windows XP and Linux (XP installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots

It says you can format the whole drive when installing XP and then resize the XP partition during Ubuntu installation, but I think my way would work too.
I will leave that choice to you, and maybe it's best just to follow the guide exactly though.

Gaster is correct. You need to install Windows first and then ubuntu to make it a duel boot system. This is what I am running.
If you try to install windows on a computer where linux is already installed it will write over the linux and you will end up with only windows anyway.
It is almost a no brainer to install linux on a windows system; ubuntu will take care of making partitions for the linux install. It will ask you how much of the hard disk that windows is installed on do you want to use for linux. I would suggest 75/25% for a start.
Its really pretty easy; hell even I can do it. Take care; fdalbor
