I've read that a Dell Mini 10V is probably the best hackintosh set out there but with it comes the pain of having to completely dismentle the set to jack up the ram to 2GB and also the poor screen res. I have a couple of questions: 1. So what's the state of play for a new Dell Mini 10 (i.e. 1012)? I read in another thread that you can't really get video hardware acceleration and sound going. Is it going to take long? Or are we just talking 1 or 2 months? Also how's dual booting going on this? I really need to be able to boot OSX and some form of windows. 2. I'm mighty confused by all of these model numbers 1010, 1011, 1012, what's what?We can still get Mini 10Vs here in Australia. It's currently on sale as well but is still more expensive than you boys in the US. Can anyone of you verify the one they're selling here is the right thing? |

You should browse the OS X section of the forum for lots of helpful advice. My reading of this is that OS X on the 1012 is not yet quite ready. The link you show is for a 10v (1011). This will run OS X well. The 1012 is the newest model with the Intel "Pine Trail" Atom processor N4xx. The 1011 uses the older N2xx processor - the N4xx isn't really any faster but does have longer battery life. The 1010 is aimed at viewing HD movies but is otherwise slower than the others. They sent an email saying 1011 was now end of life and sent me a 1010 (at no extra cost, they were keen to add). I had told theme I was only going to get a 1011 and if they couldn't fulfill my order, they should have refunded my money. I'm now going to force a refund and it's taking all this time up waiting on hold for them to attend to me. Anyhow, I'm going to take the plunge and buy one off eBay. unfortunately none of them come with Windows 7. Only XP for the new sets. Any warnings? Here's what I hope to do. (Any links to doing these will be helpful): 1. Dual Boot Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.5.8. I don't need 10.6. Is this possible? I'd probably need to install onto a blank HDD since I will be upgrading the HDD to a 500GB. Do I need XP discs to do this? I had bought a copy of 10.5 and can use that since my new mac had 10.6 on it. 2.I was reading that sleep on lid close doesn't work out of the box for OS X. Any solutions? 3. Is there a step by step how to on how to change over the HDD and the RAM? 4. What type of HDD and RAM do I need to buy? I would really appreciate any help I can get... . |

There is a whole section here on the forum for dual booting here: link: Operating Systems - Dual Booting at MyDellMini 2. you can check the OSX section for any updates on the sleep issue here: link: Operating Systems - Mac OS X at MyDellMini 3. you can download the service manuals from Dell here: link: Dell Inspiron 1011 Service Manual 4. Memory: DDR2 PC2-5300, or DDR2 PC2-6400, putting in faster memory will not matter, it will still run at 553mhz Disk Drive: any standard 2.5 inch SATA drive will work...SATA 3 will not work, SATA 2 is ok either 5400rpm or 7200rpm will work, some 7200rpm drives tend to be more noisy then 5400rpm drives....can also buy an SSD (Solid State Drive, ie. no moving parts) but they are much, much more expensive and personally I believe more prone to failures. Good Luck..... ![]() ![]() PS. You can also check the For Sale section on this forum, you may find a 1011 already upgraded..... link: Miscellaneous - For Sale at MyDellMini Here is one: I am sure there are more also link: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/sale...-like-new.html ![]() |

I'm going to keep a runnning log of my adventures setting up this Dell Mini10V. The goal is to get a 10" Netbook doing a triple boot of OSX 10.6+ and Windows XP and whatever flavour tickles my fancy. I will be updating this as I go along... . So one step at a time: 1.0 RAM 1.1 Specifications Found this from BigDaddy here: Quote:
a) 2GB RAM upgrade Poll 1.3 Install 2.0 HDD So I'll need something big to run my dual boot. 500GB seems decent enough (more than my MacBook has already). Though the point of contention is between 5400 and 7200RPM drives. Heat is the key issue and battery life coming a close second. From what I can see, most people go for 500GB 5400RPM drives. There is also a problem if you're installing Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) that Western Digital 500GB Scorpio Blue Sata 5400RPM 8MB and so does the Seagate Momentus 320GB have a constant "ticking" noise. You will need a SATA 2 (3.0GB) drive. Do not confuse this with SATA 3. The latter will work at 6.0 GB data rate. Product of choice seems to be: 2.1 Specifications 2.2 Discussions a) Hard Drive Recommendations? b) Who has a large HD that doesn't click with Snow Leopard? 2.3 Install 3.0 Bluetooth So I ended up buying a module off eBay. 3.1 Specifications 3.2 Discussions Bluetooth on Dell Mini10V 3.3 Install 4.0 SD Memory Slot 5.0 Triple Booting 5.1 Discussions a) OS X SL Install on Dell 10V with Existing XP b) Triple Boot Videos and Guide Using Chameleon, OS X, Windows 7 & Ubuntu Netbook Remix 6.0 Pimping it out a) Post your 10v Pics Here! | Member Posts: 44 Join Date: Mar 2010 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Updating: I've managed to pull the whole machine apart. Put in 2GB Kingston RAM, 500GB Samsung SATA2 HDD and the BT module. Now I have a blank canvas to work with. I'd ideally like a triple boot system. 2 fixed systems in Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.5.8 and 1 more partition as a scratch partition to install flavours of the month like Android and Jolicloud when the inspiration takes control. There are a tremendous number of threads detailing this but alot of them seem old and I'm wondering what's been superseded already. Furthermore there seems to be NBI upgrades and also this bootloader called Chameleon + all this talk about updating the BIOS? Is there anyone who can help a noob like me navigate through this. You can see from my previous post I'm putting up a step by step so I have been trawling through but is there some kind of generic path to getting my system done? If I have access to a USB DVD drive will it make my install simpler? So Step 2 - BIOS update? Step 2? ..... Yes, a USB DVD drive will make this simpler as all you need is the Netbook Maker CD and your OS X install DVD. Install OS X first. You can update the BIOS if you like. I am going to move this thread to the Dual Boot section as that seems to be where most of your questions are. Mini 9|2GB RAM|64GB RunCore|Intel 5300|Windows 8 |

This was my intro thread, I tried to keep most of the basic questions to a noobie thread so as not to piss the advanced users off. However since holmes4 has moved the thread here, perhaps I should ask here. I've found some old threads, and some which don't say alot but I can say alot of the info seems disjointed for me and I don't know what's been superseded. As per my intro, I'm very noobish to hackintosh-ing so please be patient. My ideal situation is a triple boot system which has 10.5.8, Win XP and a scratch partition where I can keep trying newish distros of linux/android or some other popular netbook flavour. I have no upgraded my 10V with 2GB of RAM, 500GB HDD and Bluetooth. Anyone can point me in the direction of how I can achieve this triple boot? Do I upgrade the BIOS first then start? (Some threads seem to say installs don't agree well with some BIOS upgrades)... .
