After partioning the drive, I insert my usb with OS X everthing works until I run the disk utility it wont let me format the partition for "GUID" unless I reformat the entire drive which erases the Xp partion.
cnreese, It's given you that message because OSX uses GPT as the hard drive format, the OS install file I mention in the above quote is the patch which tricks the installer into allowing installation onto MBR (windows format).

Try putting the 'OS install' file at the beginning of the thread - it might work for you!

Default Same problem - 09-01-2010, 12:26 AM

I had the same problem, solved by replacing the OSinstall file on the USB stick. Follow the directions exactly and you will succeed.

"this has been discussed earlier in this forum but I am still having a problem with making a proper USB installer. I cannot navigate to the OSinstall file to replace it with the file to enable installation of SL on an MBP. I consistently receive the message to change the partition to GUID which erases XP which I need at times. I know the file is on the USB stick since I can find it with Pacifist, but cannot replace it. Now I have a very stable and functional 10.6.3 SL on the 10v but want to do the whole install to have the dual boot which I have not been able to do so far. It must be some elementary step that I am overlooking but I cannot access the System folder on the 16gb USB stick. Yes, I am a total noob, please point me in the right direction. NP

I went back and used the Terminal (on my desktop Mac) commands for showing hidden files and everything fell into place. Did not use them the first time through since I could see the file on the desktop Mac without it. I did not expect to see so many hidden files, even all over the desktop of the Mac. Now I think I have successfully replaced the file on the USB stick and am ready to use the XP restore disk and start all over. NP"

Dell 10v (Nickelodeon), Win XP Home already installed. Retail version 10.6.3 Snow Leopard. Used Easus to resize partition. When trying to boot off my USB stick, I get the following:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x2a96f6) : "Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM "@SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.12/osfmk/i386/pmCPU.c:72
and I get a prompt to restart the dell. never get past this point.
Any ideas or suggestions? This has been driving me nuts for the last 2 weeks.

I'm pretty sure it's to do with the OS install file as, when I removed the file the installer loaded but obviously wouldn't let me install onto my dual boot MBR hard drive. I've followed the file path to the letter and used the file from the link on page 1 of this thread.

I've got a retail version of 10.6.3, is there a different 'OS install' file for SL?

Frustratingly close and any help would be gratefully received!
Virtually the same problem here. Brand new Nick. Edition 10v. Had a small problem with the NetbookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC1 which would not run on my MB Pro (10.5.8). Upgraded to 10.6.3 on the MB Pro and it seemed to fix--

After formatting the new Mac partition with Mac util from the USB drive, things froze. I clicked once and the "Preparing Installation" did appear but after a while it froze too. After maybe 15 minutes I forced a shut down and started over with the OS X installation.

It locked up again at "Preparing Installation". The little horizontal barber pole slid for 5 or 10 minutes but it has stopped now as well. Do I need to track down a different OS X image? I'm using a retail 10.6.3 disk I just bought right now. I hate to randomly re-buy the OS that I just paid for as a test...

Suggestions anyone?

I'm curious-- do you know what Mac OS version was on the Mac you used to build the USB installer? There must be some issue with something about 10.6.3-- several of us seem to have issues with it.

Default OSX Installer - 09-18-2010, 07:06 AM

I used a 10.6.0 installer disk to make the hacked installer. It may be that the 10.6.3 disk currently available is not suitable even though updating once the install is done is possible (currently running 10.6.4 on the 10v).

I just got done trying NBM 0.8.4 RC1 on a Mini 10v from my 2009 Mini 2.26, and it just gave me what I call the "Blue barber pole of death." It just sat there "Preparing Installation" for 20 minutes when I shut it down.

I have Hackintoshed my Mini before using Gizmodo's AMAZING guide, but I need Windows for school, so this guide is the one I am going with.

I think that there might be something valid in regards to there being an inherent problem when using the 10.6.3. disk image... That's what I've been trying, but to no avail(with this method that is).

Also I have tried a few more boot loaders from the Google downloads page, but I have since forgotten which ones. I'll run though the list again and post my results.

One more thing- If it does turn out that the problem is in us using the 10.6.3 disk, and that is the only one available for purchase in stores...where do I get an older version?

Ok... Just tried to run(again) NetbookInstaller 0.8.4 RC1 on my prepared jumpdrive- It did not recognize it. By that I mean it listed my hard drives, but not the thumb drive.

NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 notices it, so it's not the jumpdrive itself, and it can also be seen in Finder. I do not get it, especially considering the success some of you have had with it.

Just wanted to drop a note thanking the OP for the guide. Hadn't been keeping up with the scene lately so the guide was very helpful when a friend asked me to help him with dual booting a 10v that he bought cheap (apparently Dell was blowing out Nickelodeon-branded 10vs).

The most complicated part of the entire process was taking the 10v apart to upgrade the memory. I can't believe Dell designed the 10v without easy access to the memory!
