Sounds like it might be choking on weirdness due to the hybrid MBR/GPT partitioning used on hackintoshes. I believe Jolicloud also uses an older version of GRUB, it might not like hybrid partitioning.

A tool like "gptsync" might be able to help (gptsync makes the MBR partition table match the GPT table).

Tried gptsync from both MacOSX and from Ubuntu and it does sync the MBR and GPT. But I still got the same error.

I spent a few hours trying to dual-boot SL and JoliCloud, including work at the command line changing which was the boot partition. My conclusion: you're on to something important. I suspect that unless JoliCloud is the first partition, you're going to be hosed.
