Default Dual booting with OS X but keeping stock XP partition - 01-25-2010, 07:17 PM

I tried searching and didnt find many solid leads to answering my question. Basically like my macbook, i want to run windows XP on a different partition. But with Mac it was easy because of boot camp.

All i want to do is create a new partition and install mac OS X on that new partition without wiping out the stock XP side that came with my netbook.

Any ideas on how i can make that happen?

If not, could i run bootcamp?

Well to answer your question here is what you need to do.
#1 Create a 2nd partition for osx
#2 Prepare you snow leo install (search forum for methods if you dont know)
#3 install SL or Leopard and when you finish install it will only boot into Leo
#4 with a usb drive or cd drive for your netbook run the xp repair disk
#5 repair xp's boot loader and boot into XP since that is your only option
#6 one in XP install easybcd and set up the new OS its X86 specify where its booting from
#7 reboot and you can now select between Leo and XP
Any ?S feel free to ask or PM

*You cannot run Bootcamp on netbooks BTW*

HI all,

First post so please expect me to me very Noobish !

Im glad i stumbled across this post as this is exactly what i wanted to do.

Im very sure i saw a guide on here on how to tripple boot with Ubuntu. Does anyone know where the link is ?

Am i right in thinking that Camelon is a boot loader so would this be able to deal with the modified boot sequence ?

Im in exactly the same boat as ahandlen003 as i have a brand new vanillia 1011 and i dont want to lose the XP side of things in case the needs arises for me to use it for somthing ( i really dont know what yet)

Many thanks and what a great community ( i nearly bought a wind but the community support is much better here than on their forums!)

As long as you have your xp disc to do the repair of the bootloader your good. As for chameleon i had never had good luck with that so this guide below shows you how to triple boot. I use Linux Grub loader since i quad boot. If you have any ?s just PM for a quick answer or ask here

Edit: heres the link sorry

I use Chameleon to triple-boot OS X, Win 7, and Ubuntu. There are 2 issues that make the experience less user-friendly than it could be. One is the need to repair Windows after installing Chameleon. The other is inability to hibernate in Windows. I have discovered fixes for both issues, reported them to the NBI developer, and hope to see the fixes in a future version. Until then, you can read about the fixes here and implement them yourself to make Chameleon work quite well for dual- or triple-booting (and presumably quad-). Chameleon is much nicer graphically than Grub or EasyBCD, which are the 2 most popular alternatives.

Thanks for getting back to me guys, the movies are very good and make it a bit easier to understand.

I think i will try the Chameleon route first as i only want two OS's running to start with.

1) is there anywhere i can get a xp repair utility to repair the fudged bootloader that will boot fron a usb stick ? I do have a genuine OEM copy but i dont have a USB dvd rom to plug in.

2) i take it that if i boot from a usb stick version of OSX i can use the disk utility at the start to make the partition mac OS extended and it will leave the rest fat32 for the XP install.

3) on a side note ( and not strictly on this part of the forum i know) can the HD be upgraded ? I see that most of you are running the stock 160GB but can you slip a 320GB in there ?

Many thanks for your help so far .

well to repair the bootloader from a usb stick you must make the usb drive bootable then you must copy the contents of the xp disc to the usb drive. Here is a guide using command prompt to make the usb bootable then all you do is copy the contents of the xp disc onto it.
