Is there any way to do this without a Mac?

Default Alternatives to EASEUS for Creating the Partition? - 02-24-2010, 07:32 AM

The only problem I encountered was that the installer kept quitting on kernel panics, until I reran Netbookbootmaker using the latest version, and then the install went smoothly (using the force option). I ran NetbookInstaller after the install was completed, before it rebooted the first time.

I'm now able to boot up either factory XP or SL without an issue.

Good luck!
Yigbo,

Is there another option to make a new partition besides EASEUS? That appears to be $70 program I don't have. A freeware or existing XP utility would be ideal.

Thank you

I think you might be looking at the wrong program from EASEUS, they have a lot of different programs that they offer. The one you would need is actually FREE

If you bought a Mini10V (I did not try it on other machines) with XP on it, and you want to dual boot with Snow Leopard without wiping the XP, that's the tutorial for you.
(take a look at this tutorial as it may also be helpful: Install Snow Leopard on Your Hackintosh PC, No Hacking Required - Hackintosh - Lifehacker)

you will need:
1. A retail DVD of SL ($29, not the one coming with a new mac).
2. A flash drive at least 8GB in size.
3. A mac to prepare the flash drive on.
4. The magic file (from http://cache.gawker.com/assets/image...ow_Leopard.zip) that will save you some terminal work.
5. The file netbookbootmaker (from http://netbook-installer.googlecode....tMaker.app.zip).
6. OSInstall file (from RapidShare Webhosting + Webspace).

1. On a mac, create an image of the retail DVD.
2. Using Disk Utility, format a (at least) 8GB flash drive to mac os journaled.
3. Restore the image you created from the dvd to the flash drive.
4. Run magic (4 in the "you will need section").
5. Run netbookbootmaker (5 in the "you will need section").
6. Replace osinstall in (/Volumes/<The name of the partition on your flash drive>/System//Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/OSInstall) with the modified file (this will let you install OSX on an MBR partitioned drive (6 in the "you will need section").
7. Boot to the flash drive you just created.
8. Using Disk Utility, format the partition on which you want to install Snow Leopard to osx journaled.
9. Install SL normally.
10. Done.
After I run step 5 (Run netbookbootmaker), I don't see how I can take step 6. When I look at the contents of the flash drive, it just contains 3 things:
Install Mac OS X
Instructions folder
Optional Installs folder

I don't see any directory structure for System//Library/Private. . . .

I'm new to Mac OS, so maybe I'm just completely missing something?

UPDATE: Nevermind, I figured out I have to use Terminal to do this. Need to wait for the wife to wake up and do this for me. Don't really know Unix.

Thanks

I think this would be the appropriate guide if you didn't have a Mac, but read carefully to make sure. . .

Thank a lot MacMigs.

Have you tried this dual boot process yourself? My 10V w/XP preinstalled will arrive this Friday and trying to prepare all the USB boot drive stuff now.

But still stuck on the OSInstall replacement step as noted in my other post. Not sure if I didn't create the USB boot drive correctly because I just don't see the extensive directory structure there. . .

I've actually tried following this guide on a new 10v with XP already preinstalled a couple of days ago. I didn't have success. Like yourself, I was confused when I got to Part 6 and replacing the OSInstall file. I'm actually a Mac person, always have been since high school when the Apple IIe first came out. I've got a seriously equipped 8 core Mac Pro and a newer 13" MacBook Pro Unibody.

If you double click on the Snow Leopard image to mount it an open it up, it'll show the 3 icons. One being the disc icon with the arrow. If you right-click on that icon, it'll give you the option to "Show Package Contents". Next it'll give you a folder called "Contents". Inside that folder are 8 other files/folders. One of the folder being "MacOS". Inside that folder is an Exec file named "Install Mac OS X". I believe this is the file that needs to be replaced, BUT... the path doesn't even begin to match the one listed in the instructions which is... System//Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/OSInstall

I went ahead and ended up replacing the original "Install Mac OS X" file with the one listed in the instructions.. "OSInstall".

I started the install process but when I got to the part to actually try and make a GUID partition on the hard drive, the partition I made with EASEUS wasn't showing up in my list of choices. I think the problem "MAY" have been because I formatted the adjusted / new partition. Yigbo had mentioned he left it alone, unformatted.

I ended up wiping out the entire drive and just installed OS X Snow Leopard over everything. I didn't really need XP anyway. I just wanted to see if I could make it work. The 10v I did this on wasn't even for me, it's for my girlfriend and she doesn't know Macs or OS X. Well.. after playing with it for a few minutes she was hooked and didn't care that it didn't have XP on it cause she liked OS X so much more. YES... !!! I converted her...!!!

I'm actually thinking about getting a 10v for myself and trying this procedure again sometime soon and not formatting that adjusted XP partition to see what happens. As much as I love my 13" MacBook Pro, I really like the smaller size and lightness of the 10v for taking on the road. Sure it has it's limitations, but it's not like I'm going to be doing anything major with it while I'm out and about. I'm really impressed with how everything "works" using Snow Leopard, even the webcam / mic in iChat. That's so awesome. I've yet to test it with Skype for OS X, but I'm sure it works fine also.

Sorry for the rambling everyone. It's really late and I need to go to sleep...

Maybe the original starter of this thread "ramyaniv" or maybe even "yigbo" can chime in and help clarify Step 6 regarding the replacement of the install file.

I know you're responding to the post below mine. In the meantime, I'm already using that now - making the image file is the easy part.

What's not easy is step 2 onwards from this guide, which uses Mac utils.

Thanks. Maybe, if you don't try it first, I can try it when I get mine. Mine arrives Monday (delayed from Friday).

But what makes me skeptical is that the file name doesn't even seem to be the same. If InstallOS were sitting in a different location, then that's one thing. But if it has a different name "Install Mac OS X", then I'm thinking something more fundamental has changed. Maybe our versions of Snow Leopard are more recent and the structure resulting from the the USB image is fundamentally different.

I really would like to keep XP as a boot option since I'd like to take this on biz trips and my demo units require XP OS.

I already have a Mini 9, but problem is that it only has a 8GB SSD. Otherwise, I could keep the 10V as XP for a bit and use the Mini 9 as my hackintosh (which I'm dying to play with). But don't want to buy a larger SSD in addition to the 10V cost I just absorbed.

Would be great to hear from someone who overcame the obstacle we're having in Step 6 and can confirm that replacing "Install Mac OS X" with "InstallOS" file actually works.

Thanks for sharing your experience. If you do try this with a new 10V, please post the results. I'll do the same if I end up trying on my side.

Ah, I see. Well I'm sure if you sent a forum member with Mac a USB key and SL disk, someone would be willing to make the modified USB boot up drive for you.

Even with a Mac, I'm stuck at Step 6, so until I figure out how to get around that and confirm success, I'm probably not the right guy. But if I can figure out a solution, I'd be happy to do this for you using my wife's Mac.

Default File Path - 02-24-2010, 04:54 PM

Just for $hits & giggles... I checked the file path from the instructions to change the OS install file on my MacBook Pro and it IS a valid path:

System//Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/OSInstall

But, I don't know how or if it's accessible from within the Snow Leopard install image.

Seriously.... has anyone else besides yigbo had success with this method of installing Snow Leopard on a 10v with XP already on it...?

Ok, so I was able to figure out a way to swap the OS install file without using Terminal and Unix commands. I downloaded a program called iTweakX. It allows you to tweak preferences and a lot of other things in OS X, but most importantly, it allows you to "see" hidden files. When I installed it and launched on my MacBook I set it up to "show hidden files and folders. When I plugged in my USB stick to my MacBook and opened up the OS X install disc image, there were about 27 files / folders being shown now, as opposed to the original 3 with all the other files being hidden. I can now navigate to the file path that is listed in the instructions and swap the OSInstall file:
System//Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/OSInstall

You don't have to use the iTweakX program to view hidden files on the Mac. I think there's actually a terminal command for it, but you'd have to Google it to find out what it is.

I don't know when I'm going to be able to try this XP / OS X Snow Leopard install again since my girlfriend is more than happy with just having OSX on her 10v. I just want to be able to try it again cause it's driving me nuts.... LOL
