Question File Systems - 10-26-2009, 03:26 PM

What is the most reliable way to share files between multi-boot systems?

I try FAT32, but it is limited to 4G files (so I can't put backup DMG there) and the cluster size is a performance issue when a larger disk partition is involved.

Anyone have good experience with RELIABLE add-on for NTFS Read/Write driver for OSX and/or HFS+ Read/Writer driver for WIN7?

Thanks in advance.

I use MacDrive on my Win7 partition and Paragon Software NTFS for Mac on my 10.6.1 partition.

I read somewhere that Snow Leopard included a Windows driver for HFS+ but I can't find it. It isn't listed as one of the things that can be installed if you mount the SL DVD in Windows.

You can read files on an NTFS partition from SL, but you can't edit them in place.

Its part of the boot camp install. You put the SL OS X install disc into the PC and choose to install Boot Camp. After the installer is done installing tons of things you don't care about you'll have 2 things you would want. The registry was modified to say that the clock is universal time and you'll have the HFS+ drivers. I know there was a post here (somewhere, can't even remember which forum now, sorry) pointing over the the OSX86 forum, I believe, where someone had claimed to have pulled the HFS+ driver from the Boot Camp installer.

The NTFS write support that was enabled in the SL betas was removed from the final release. Apple claimed it had problems. There is info out on the web on how to enable it, as the code is still there in the release but just turned off.

You can also go the MacFUSE and NTFS-3G route to enable SL (and Leopard) to read/write HFS+

I did not run any of the SL betas and I could see the files on the NTFS partition on my 10v. I could drag files off the NTFS partition and edit them in SL.

Thanks, bsoplinger. I thought that might be the case, but there was no mention of the drivers. At this point, I'll hold off because I don't want all the other stuff.

I have already determined that I can read the NTFS disk from SL, which is all I care about from that direction. (I have a FAT32 SD card both can read and write so I can use that for transfers if needed.) It might come in handy for Windows to be able to read the HFS disk and if I ever do need that, I'll look at the various solutions.

I had troubles trying to upgrade my Win 7 RC to actual release so needed to go back and install the HFS+ Apple drivers. Didn't want to do the whole boot camp thing right now so I grabbed these: Windows HFS+ Driver from Snow Leopard Boot Camp - InsanelyMac Forum

Supposedly extracted from the whole Boot Camp installer.

Note: Feel free to edit/delete this if it violates forum guidelines.
