Anyone know if I can substitute an XP install for the Windows 7? Or does XP need to be in the first large partition?

Boot from the ubuntu install media, and install grub onto the grub partition, partition 4, or (hd0,3) in grub notation:
open terminal (accessories, terminal)
sudo grub
find /boot/grub/stage1
root (hd?,?) [from before, probably (hd0,3)
setup (hd0,3)
quit
sudo apt-get install gptsync [it's not on the install image]
sudo gptsync [recreates the hybrid mbr]

when i put "sudo grub" i get "command not found"

what am i doing wrong??

I had the same issue, I switched to the alternative method where windows 7 is basically in charge of flipping partitions. Worked like a champ.

Now if I could find out how to get XP on there instead of windows 7, I'll probably ask in the more active thread. Curious about backups of each systems as well. Acronis is not digging the hybrid MBR/GUID I believe.

Oh, that is actually quite a good point which I completely overlooked in my earlier explanation. I think you'll have to chroot into your original distribution as otherwise it can't properly reinstall grub.

Here are revised instructions for the whole process:

( In this example I assume your disk is /dev/sda , default for macbooks, and your root partition is /dev/sda4 , adapt these if necessary! )

1) Download an Ubuntu Live CD ( see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD ) and burn the ISO to CD.
2) Boot your macbook from the CD (hold option key at startup if you don't have rEFIt)
3) Open a terminal, mount your original root partition
- $ sudo mkdir /mnt/root
- $ sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda4 /mnt/root
4) Find the correct package for your architecture on Debian -- Details of package gptsync in sid and download it to somewhere under /mnt/root/
5) Set up /proc and /dev
- $ sudo mount -t proc none /mnt/root/proc
- $ sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/root/dev
6) Chroot into your original system, you're now in your own system.
- $ sudo chroot /mnt/root /bin/bash
7) Install the package downloaded in step 4
- $ sudo dpkg --install gptsync*deb
Run gptsync on the affected disk
- $ sudo gptsync /dev/sda
9) Reinstall grub (this shouldn't overwrite rEFIt, but you can keep a copy of rEFIt on CD if you're concerned)
- $ sudo grub-install /dev/sda
10) reboot, the system should be able to boot again now

Hopefully it works for you, this is what I did in my situation as well.

I also installed grub to /dev/sda4 partition (during the install of ubuntu, the last screen, select the advanced button and choose it there)... So I also issued the following commands in step 5: (not sure if it was needed but oh well)

#sudo mkdir /mnt/root/boot
#sudo mount -t ext2 /dev/sda4 /mnt/root/boot

ALSO NOTE: I did not reinstall grub (Step 9)... dunno if it was needed, seeing as when i did the original install of ubuntu I installed grub to /dev/sda4 anyway.

I managed to get a triple boot running with OS 10.6.2, Win7HP, and Ubuntu NR 9.10 using
Anguish's method + NBI 0.8.3 RC5. One problem: The boot loader shows ugly HDDs
instead of nice Mac, Win7 and Linux logos. How do I fix that?

Replace the following drive icon files in /Extra/Theme/Default (which is the default theme for the Chameleon boot loader):
device_ext3.png (Linux)
device_hfsplus.png (Mac)
device_ntfs.png (Windows)

If you search, you can find other Chameleon themes. Most of them are not sized to display properly on the 10v, so you may have to resize the graphics files to the scale of the default theme.
