Post HowTo Guide: Step-by-Step OSX/Win7 Dual Boot Install
Items Needed:
 Preparation:
  • Format 128+MB USB Flash Drive as “FAT” and name it “OSX-BOOT”
  • Extract “DellMiniBoot” files to it
  • Open Command Prompt (as Administrator)
  • Navigate to SysLinux “win32” directory
  • Type: syslinux.exe –ma XX: (where XX is your 128+MB USB Flash Drive Letter)
  • Install “TransMac” (to make a copy of your Retail OSX DVD)
  • Insert Retail OSX DVD
  • Right-Click on DVD drive
  • Select “Save Image of Disk” to Desktop (--8GB image will take awhile--)
  • Format 8+GB USB Flash Drive with “Disk Image” and name it “OSX-INST”
  • Choose your 8GB image from your Desktop
  • Format 4+GB USB Flash Drive as “FAT32” and name it “WIN-INST”
  • Extract Windows 7 files to it
  • Copy “BOOTMGR” file and rename to “NTDLR”
Configuration:
  • Boot Dell Mini 10v, press “F2” to enter BIOS
  • Set USB BIOS Legacy Support to Enabled
  • Exit BIOS, Saving Changes
  • Insert “WIN-INST” USB Flash Drive
  • Boot Dell Mini 10v, press “F12” to select USB Drive
  • At Windows 7 install screen, press “Shift+F12” (to bring up the Command Prompt)
  • Type: DiskPart (start Disk Partition tool)
  • Type: List Disk
  • Type: Select Disk 0 (select the main HD)
  • Type: Clean (clean all files from it)
  • Type: Convert GPT (setup GUID Partition Table)
  • Type: Create Partition EFI Size=200 (Win7 EFI Boot Partition)
  • Type: Create Partition Primary Size=40000 (Mac OSX Partition)
  • Type: Create Partition Primary Size=40000 (MS Win7 Partition)
  • Type: List Partition (show HD partitions)
  • Type: Select Partition 3 (MS Win7 Partition)
  • Type: Format FS=NTFS Quick (format it as NTFS)
  • Type: Exit (exit Disk Partition tool)
OSX Installation:
  • Insert “OSX-BOOT” USB Flash Drive (in USB port close to Power port)
  • Insert “OSX-INST” USB Flash Drive (in USB port close to you)
  • Boot Dell Mini 10v, press “F12” to select USB Drive
  • At Darwin Chameleon boot screen, press “ESC” (to bring up Boot Device Prompt)
  • Type: 81 (to select the OSX-INST USB Flash Drive) – (80 is the OSX-BOOT USB Flash Drive)
  • Press “Enter” (it will show that it’s booting from the Retail OSX Image)
  • Click the “->” button at the bottom (may be hard to see due to screen resolution)
  • Select “Utilities” then “Disk Utility” (to format the drive you are going to install OSX on)
  • Right-Click on the “Disk0S2” drive, and format as “OSX Extended Journal” (name it what you want)
  • Click the “Continue” button, then the “Agree” button (to the EULA)
  • Click the drive to install to (the one you formatted and named above)
  • Click the “Customize” button (to remove any unneeded Languages, Printers Drivers, etc.)
  • Click the “Done” button, then the “Install” button (--installation will take awhile--)
  • After the OSX Install is done, click the “Restart” button (it may show an Install Failed screen)
  • Remove OSX USB Flash Drives
WIN Installation:
  • Insert “WIN-INST” USB Flash Drive
  • Boot Dell Mini 10v, press “F12” to select USB Drive
  • Click the “I agree…” checkbox, then click the “Next” button (to the EULA)
  • Click the “Custom” install (not the upgrade option)
  • Click the “Disk 0 Partition 3” location (as created earlier)
  • Click the “Next” button (--installation will take awhile--)
  • After the Win7 install is done, finish configuring your personal user info (username, password, etc.)
Boot Manager Installation:
  • Install EasyBCD (to setup dual-boot with OSX)
  • Click on “Add/Remove Entries”
  • Click on the “Mac” tab
  • Select “Generic x86 PC” from the “Type” Dropdown
  • Name the selection what you want (as it will show on the boot selection screen)
  • Click the “Save” button, and Exit EasyBCD
  • Restart the Computer
Dell EFI Installation:
  • Insert “OSX-BOOT” USB Flash Drive (in USB port close to Power port)
  • Boot Dell Mini 10v, press “F12” to select USB Drive
  • At Darwin Chameleon boot screen, press “ESC” (to bring up Boot Device Prompt)
  • Type: 81 (to select the OSX-INST USB Flash Drive) – (80 is the OSX-BOOT USB Flash Drive)
  • Note: The Setup Assistant won’t run to configure username, password, etc. (due to screen resolution)
  • Click on the “Go” button to go to OSX
  • Navigate to Dell EFI folder on USB Flash Drive
  • Click the “Yes” button on the popup (it’s verifying that you still want to run it even though it’s not a Dell Mini 9)
  • Click the “Install” button on the Easy Installation
  • Click the “OK” button to the admin popup (since there is no Admin password setup yet)
  • Click the ‘Yes” button to reboot
Final OSX Boot:
  • At the Windows Boot Manager, select your OSX installation name
  • Note: It may take awhile to boot this time (after the Dell EFI install)
  • You’re done! You now have a dual booting Win 7 and Mac OSX Dell Mini 10v

Not sure about SL, haven't tried it yet.
I would imagine so, but may need different kexts or something.

What about installing XP instead of Win 7?

XP == teh no (at least with this method).

Basically, XP only works on MBR disks. The method above manages to fool Windows 7 into installing on a GPT disk, although it normally will not.

There is a couple of ways around it though, as I understand it. I tried once or twice, but wasn't successful. You should be able to find a couple of threads on here that discuss how to dual boot OS X and Windows XP though.

Good call and thx for the assist anguish ;-)

Glad ya like the guide schnide, there are a couple others out there, but I wanted something with less wordage. Just bullets - quick and to the point.

i'm curious whether the bios for the 10v should be rolled back to A4 or can it be A6 with this method.

I haven't tried this method with different BIOS versions, I'll check which I am running and update the Post with the info.

This method does not work with BIOS A06. I have flashed my BIOS to A04 though and I am giving it a go right now.

thanks for the great guide. having some problems installing win 7 32 bit. when i select partition 3 to install win7 to, i get an error saying that it cannot install to a GPT partition. Is the gpt for the mac os? if so why does it have to be done to the whole drive and not just the mac partition?
