I'm just as new, to be honest. I spent hours, upon even more hours, reading anything I could about doing the QDL tool. What I've found out is that, if you do the upgrade to 2.2, pre Dell/AT&T release, then you would have to reimage back to stock image. You can do a search on XDA developers to find that link, but you can always reimage back to what you 1.6, and then get the OTA update from AT&T/Dell.
the first time I used QDL tool, I was VERY apprehensive. I didn't want to Brick my new Streak or void the warranty. I went ahead and did it, and I couldn't have been happier since doing so. The difference is night & day to the 1.6 version.
I might try out the OTA update when it comes out, but the latest ROM from DJ_Steve is phenomenal! 1.5.3 (Biscuit Madness) is great!
I'd suggest that if you are going to return the Streak to Best Buy, then go ahead and do the QDL tool. They won't turn on the device or anything when you return it, and you won't be out anything for trying. I suspect that after you do though, you'll be very happy with your new Streak. The 1.5.3 ROM is like having a whole new device!
Final choice is always yours though, but the Streak has become my best friend! everything about it is amazing!
