Question Dell Streak Ram 512M or 398M - 09-01-2010, 11:26 PM

I've just got my dell streak from O2 for a couple of days.

when downloaded some apps to check out the hardware information today, i found out that
my streak only got 398M of Ram in total instead of 512M as advertised on O2 website:
Dell Streak Spec - O2

so far there is only the review by engadget mentioned about this but without any detail. (just google dell streak review it should come up in the top few results.)

so i just wonder if any one has he same problem? or knows whats going on?

If I worked this out right, my task killing app reports no more than 256MB RAM. So I think somethings awry here.
EDIT: Apparently, now, I have 401MB RAM, so maybe it really DOES have the 512? o.o

There is probably 512MB RAM but like with any PC some of that is likely shared with video a nd the linux kernel will also use a chunk which will never be reported as available.

i wasnt using task killer app the apps i used are something like hardware info or droidinfo. and they always quote the total amount of ram not ram available.

but it probably makes sense that the memory is shared with graphic or system kernal. ill check with my friend whos got htc desire to confirm cuz desire has the same processor.

Hope it does have 512mb - as min spec for android 3.0 is 1ghz processor and 512mb ram... fingers crossed.

Still... 2.1/2.2 would be good in the mean time!

It would actually cost more to give it an odd amount of memory rather than simply the 512K, even if some of the 512k is inaccessible/used by other stuff/etc. I.e., 512k = 1 memory stick, but to make up (say) 400K with chips would take loads of wierd sized ones.

During bootup of an OS it outputs some messages as to what it finds and what is going on. One of those messages is the amount of RAM. The application (dmesg) is able to show this information. Android is a derivative of Linux: dmesg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you have the Android SDK installed on your PC, connect via USB to the droid, and enable the Dev Debugging over USB option, you can fire up "adb shell" and run dmesg from there.

Alternatively, if you had installed a terminal emulator (or activated the provided one by enabling the engineering mode and running the Dev Tools app) you could do it from there too.

That said; it's still not clear that it has 512MB or what this 512MB is. One of the flash memory cards inside appears to be 512MB, but the RAM it reports a different amount for.

...
<6>[ 0.026440] Memory: 232MB 254MB = 486MB total
...

Smells of RAM, and the closest thing I can find to how much is inside (though it may not be stating literal hardware quantities but some other value).

...
<4>[ 0.000000] Memory policy: ECC disabled, Data cache writeback
<7>[ 0.000000] On node 0 totalpages: 124416
...

124416 * 4KB = 482MB

...
<6>[ 0.927646] nandid: 5510bcad maker ad device bc
<6>[ 0.927660] Found a supported NAND device
<6>[ 0.927673] NAND Id : 0x5510bcad
<6>[ 0.927686] Buswidth : 16 Bits
<6>[ 0.927700] Density : 512 MByte
...

Smells of flash.
