Default Removing Pre-Installed Apps - 09-01-2010, 12:32 PM

Dunhamzzz, this is a quick query to you as probably know more bout the Streak than Dell itself, lol.

I wanna get rid of the preinstalled apps off my phone (MP3 Store, Getting Started, etc...), I tried the way you removed installed apps (Copy to homepage, hold and unstalled) Doesnt work. Then I used ASTRO, still doesn't work. Then after some reading I found that you can apparently only do it if you perform a 'Superboot'? Is that true.

Cheers
Taddy

"Copy to homepage, hold and unstalled"

What version (1.6/2.1, & Dell/O2/AT&T) do you have? The hold & uninstall is only an option in 1.6, not 2.1. I've seen an uninstall option in the 'manage applications' bit although I haven't tried it. I don't think this is available if you have an AT&T phone.

At the very least this will require root and some editing of the very important /system folder.

I will look into it and post some guides if I can get them to work myself, I'd love to get rid of that touch down process tbh!

I'm pretty sure I saw an option to uninstall touchdown et al somewhere. Possibly in one of those process monitor apps. However I have no idea if it'd actually work or not. Trying to remember where I saw it...

OK, I found it, but it doesn't work.

Android system info (you can download it from the market) / Apps, you get a list of applications, and once you click on one, you are offered Launch / Manage / Market / Uninstall. Touchdown etc are in the list. However, if you click uninstall on touchdown, the uninstall is unsuccessful.

I do like this app, even though the uninstall doesn't work - the Tasks view can show you how much RAM each running app is consuming.

Yeah if you use ASTRO you get the choice to uninstall, but when you try to it comes up with an Error message... hence why im getting a tad miff'd with it!

Dunhamzzz ill keep looking myself too and if i find out more or managed to do it ill let you know, Im sure there will be other members on the forum who like to know how to do this.

Hi, I got rid of Touchdown and many other bloatware courtesy Dell in my rooted Streak.

For rooting, UniversalAndroot is brilliant. You can root and unroot from the app! No complicated techniques involved. Just download it (I don't think it is listed in marketplace or Appbrain, so googling for it will point to the developer's site).

Titanium Backup and Root Explorer complete the tools.

Titanium Backup lists all the apps (system & user installed) when you select Backup/restore. If you click on an app you don't want, the next window offers 3 options - Backup, Freeze & Uninstall. Selecting Uninstall gets rid of the app in a jiffy!

Sometimes TB doesn't do it, but Root Explorer will delete the unwanted app without trouble.

System installed apps, as far as I could understand, can only be removed in rooted devices.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Ok I got it, think I might have did it in a rather complicated way, but I'm going to write up a guide.

Thanks, Taddy.

Yes, it does work and I was amazed at how easy it was to root and unroot with UniversalAndroot (by the way, when first run the app, it will say failed, just click on "root" again and it roots second time round!).

TB is excellent for backup, both free and paid versions (paid adds Clear Dalvik Cache which might be useful for market issues) and I always backup with it when I make a change.

Root Explorer is brilliant, it lets you edit system files (has a built in text editor which you bring up by clicking on menu button while running the app) WITHOUT the hugely complicated methods described in Modaco forums such as running Android SDK on your computer, adb, pull, push etc.

RE makes all that redundant. I edited build.prop with RE's text editor, it saves a .bak of the file too! With RE, it runs in R/O (read only) mode by default so you have to click on where it says R/O to make it read/write.

There are some system installed files you should NOT delete as I learnt the hard way (calendar & some others) but I haven't been able to brick my Streak despite insulting it several times!

I will try and find the list of pre-installed apps (which even shows which should be kept & which can be dumped) and post it later.

Happy days! Best wishes
