You have to make sure you push the back plate as far over to the right as it can go, there has to be no gap. If it is still popping off after that, then there must be something broken somewhere.
It's a very fiddly design Dell have chosen, but when it is on properly it should be pretty secure. Mine has never come off once.

As a reference, the 'gap' size between the top/bottom edges of the plate and the main case, is the same width that it should be between the right edge of the plate and the main case. It's like 1/2mm and should be the same thickness running right around (except for the speaker area, of course).
Even this isn't a real gap but just the perception from the curved edging of the metal pieces.
