Talking Charger cable info - 08-24-2010, 02:28 PM

Found out a few interesting bits about this today:

Is actually a PDMI - PDMI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - so should be a new industry standard cable.

Should not be propriety: Dell Streak's "proprietary" connector is actually PDMI

Someones already figured out how to make it play nice with USB: Dell Streak procures a hacked-up mini USB adapter, gets friendly with your dusty cables -- Engadget

More discussion on the subject: so much for PDMI... - Pocketables Forum

And lastly it looks like the Samsung Galaxy Tablet should have the same connector: Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 gets wild with Android 2.2 -- Engadget

Anyway, all good news for any of us who want to pick up a cheaper charger/sync cable!

On a related note, I've been charging my Dell Streak in the homedock that sits on my desk, and it literally took all day to charge as it was just connected via USB to my PC.

Now I've connected it to the USB AND plugged the homedock into a power outlet and now it charges much quicker!

Interesting stuff - wonder why so much slower! Have been impressed by speed of charging on the phone. Def getting a full day of use from the phone, but when have charged it been up to 100% in just over an hour.

Old Nokia E71 took about 5.

It must be that it can't draw much power from the HDMI dock, it's even worse than the USB cable. I think I will wall charge my Streak when I'm at home too now.

Oh sorry - you are also getting a slow charge via a pc/laptop USB port? I'd not noticed any difference to be honest - I have a laptop dock that outputs a full 5v - know some laptops and PCs actually put out just less than that.

Wow dude thanks!

I always loved the video output features of my old HTC Advantage and was pleased to see the Streak supporting these. Finding out it's a new standard of cable just made this so much better.

Try to put a powered USB-Hub between the homedock and the PC.

Just put a request in to dealextreme.com - asking them to look out for HK suppliers selling PDMI cables. Fingers crossed some 3rd party ones will start showing up soon!

The prospect of PDMI becoming a standard interface connection to compete with the ubiquitous apple dock is exactly what I have been waiting for!

I am so sick of going into shops and seeing shelf after shelf of different devices, speaker docks, sound systems, even TVs, all with docks built for just one brand of device - Apple. I hate it. It angers me. Why only apple? Why can't I get a dock for any other brand of mp3 player? any other brand of phone? Why must I be a slave to the all conquering fruit based logo if I want a dock to play my music from?

The vast array of 3rd party accessories for Apples devices are one of the pillars that keeps it's monopoly alive. Look in the latest Argos or Tesco catalogue and you'll see probably 10 whole pages dedicate solely to apple... would you see that with any other brand? No... So when Christmas comes around parents are looking through the catalogue and picking out presents for people, what brand are they going to buy? ...

Sure there are those out there who will say they buy apple because they believe they are superior (wrongly in many cases IMO)... but there are a hell of a lot of people out there who will simply by an ipod for themselves, their kids, or maybe another loved one, simply because they are to lazy or short sighted to look at alternatives... Apple products are all over the place right in front of them, and so that's what they buy...

Of course, once their kid has their ipod, has a cheap dock to go with it, has filled it with music from itunes which wont or are difficult to get to play on any other device, what are they going to do? they're going to stick with apple, and so the whole cycle continues.

If PDMI means that 3rd party manufacturers have a standard connection type that they can put into docks and other accessories and devices, so that they can compete with the ubiquitous ipod dock and make docks for a whole range of devices by a whole range of manufacturers and take down one of the pillars supporting the apple monopoly, then I say...

PDMI FTW!

It would be great if The Streak does support USB 3.

Anyone out there who has USB 3 that can test the transfer rate.
