iphone 4 to Dell Streak - my subjective review - 08-22-2010, 05:39 PM
A MINI review – from an iphone 4 to Dell Streak Switchers perspective
I am an AT&T /US user. I have upgraded the streak to 2.1 O2 ROM (thanks Jen from www.StreakSmart.com).
A quick background: I come from the days of WM5/6. Am a reluctant switcher to the iphone, slowly got sucked into the Apple app store ecosystem, BUT have always wished for a super phone that has the fluid UI and app support of the iphone, the granular control and customizability of Windows Mobile, call quality of the blackberries (Ok I guess that’s H/W not S/W), and the stability of a symbian feature phone and since we are playing maybe the sony Ericson cameras.
I imagined the android OS had a lot of my wishes covered, I came close to buying the captivate but thought I’d want a front cam, So I got the Dell Streak as my first Android device. Oh and I wanted to not have to carry a tablet and a smartphone. I seriously thought the streak was going to be the holy grail.
Now on day 3 I have a few subjective comments purely from an iphone 4 to Dell Streak Switcher (I am not flame baiting, which is why I cant stress this enough that some of my comments are very YMMV):
SIZE – ok we can’t ignore the elephant in the room, yes it is huge, but you get used to it and it fits my pockets and hands fine, Ok maybe this holds true for men.
UI – ADW launcher does a great job, the UI feels every bit as nice as the iOS, different yes but nice still. Oh and I love the unobtrusive but comprehensive notifications. Modal windows on the ios seem very invasive. So no issues with the transition.
APPS - I found 7/10 of my iphone apps on the market, so wasn’t a bad transition at all. The deficit will only narrow down and probably reverse at some point. The one app, whose absence I sorely missed was Etrade, but then again with so much of screen real estate on the screen, I guess I could just go to the website and trade. Also Apps seem to install way faster than iphone Apps. So no issues ultimately.
EXCHANGE Support – I had to mention this because I couldn’t find a free seamless exchange calendar support for my coporate exchange account. And NO I don’t want to buy NitroDesk touchdown for $20 or have Google outlook sync sitting on my office computer all day. (Contacts and email sync work great natively) If the iphone and myriad other phones do it why can’t the streak? Maybe FROYO? This is close to being a deal breaker, not by itself but we’ll see.
OS STABILITY – This could be a function of the ADW launcher , or the apps themselves but I would say I experience lags and app crashes a few times in a day. Didn’t like!
CALL QUALITY – I have to say that voice quality, clarity and volume were stellar on the handset and speakerphone and in no way worse than the iphone 4. The call stability was another story, I would have call drops all the time. 1 out of 2 calls would drop and especially true for outgoing calls, could be a function of the 3G microcell, but then again my wife and I have been using 2 iphone 4s on the same microcell and and they performs better regardless of antennagate! Didn’t like AT ALL!
DISPLAY – Had I come from the 3GS direct or another phone the display wouldn’t have stood out in a bad way, but coming from the retina display everything sort off just pales except maybe the Galaxy AMOLED. But you know what, the more I tweaked the font/zoom and kept using the Streak I got used to it. So not an issue ultimately.
CAMERA – more saturated than the iphone, the software is clunkier. I could still deal with it.
CAMCORDER – Clunkier UI on the Streak. I have 2.1 so could do a 720p comparison, the iphone video just felt sharper, better color balanced with better sound reproduction. The Streak video felt laggy on the frame rates. I guess I could live with it.
FRONT FACING camera – couldn’t find any options to turn it on, but FRING video calls looked really pale and washed out. Again not a deal breaker.
BATTERY LIFE – the iphone wins, the streak lasted me 3/4th of a day, but I played with it a lot, but not that many calls. I have push on the iphone and do a fair bit of talking and a lot of data use but it goes the day and maybe a bit more. Again YMMV based on your settings. Tough, but still not a deal breaker.
FILE TRANSFER/Sync – Dell Suite or Itunes they both have their idiosyncracies and I guess it boils down to what you’re comfortable with. It didn’t matter much and I didnt go too deep on this.
To sum it up, I could deal with the crashes, the worse camera and a shorter battery life AS LONG AS it’s a good phone. The whole point of convergence is that I carry just one device. I am old fashioned to the extent that inspite of social networking, IMs, texts and email I still feel cut off if my phone can’t make a call at my beck and call (excuse the pun). Also I am dependant on my corporate calendar with OTA sync and seamless integration where I can accept meeting requests from inside the email. Why this glaring omission on the streak?
So if we were to call this a data device primarily then I would rather carry an android tablet (or ipad ver 2) and a Smartphone w/o a huge screen.
I am going to test it one more week and next weekend I am leaning to send it back to Dell or just sell it on craigslist. I think I’ll wait for version 2 and stick with the iphone 4 for now.

To me, the size of the screen is the primary reason for buying the streak over any other phone (Android or not). Ideally there'd be less bezel and more screen within the same form-factor (I'm sure they could fit a 6" screen into it), but no doubt version 2 will go in that direction ...

What scares me, is that the Streak wont sell well enough and Dell will drop this formfactor with no plans for ver2

The sceen size is perfect. I cud be swayed to go a little bigger too hehe. But this is great. I just want them to sort out all the glitches and things, which although new, should be sorted out before roll-out, especially for the hefty price tag. I'm still having ongoing non receiving of texts which is pissing me off no end tho. Happened last night when my partner was flying back from holiday, which caused concern.
