I have insurance cover on my bank account, this thread reminded me to register my phone for it.. never did with my old phone (wasn't worth it).
When I see a consumer product receiving reinforcement it's become a warning sign to me that it's not going to be as tough as it makes out to be (if the device was naturally tough, they wouldn't try and cover it up with these extras measures - and costs).
Started to get enough of experience of that with bluray discs.. glass coated to make them more scratch resistant, yet the slightest and imperceptible to the naked eye scratch on discs that haven't suffered any abuse, has rendered some as write-offs, whereas an abused and beat-up CD/DVD continues playing fine.
What's more, the glass coating means you can't use CD/DVD repair kits to fix them either.
So that was lesson learned, products with protection NEED protecting, that's why they try and do it and will pay the extra for patented design materials. Has nothing to do with providing us a product that is stronger or more robust.
I'll continue to handle mine like it has no gorilla glass at all, but is instead made from fine bone china.
