I personally use Android Lookout for anti-virus and have had no issues with it so far.

It's more targetted at Russian users (apparently) but it would be helpful if they told us some sample App names that are being used

Currently the apps are being deployed by being sent as a link to you in an SMS text message, so you have to read the text and choose to install the app it links to.

The app name could be changed on a whim or even randomized, since you'd be installing it direct anyway rather than via an app store.

So, don't be suckered into bogus text messages is the advice for this particular one.

when you install an Android applicatio you explicitly have to allow it to do many things, so if you install any app and grant it permission to send SMS messages you shouldn't be surprised when it does.

You'll probably find similar stories like this around, most of them require the user to approve things that shouldn't be neccessary for the apps main function (e.g. A media player needing to send SMS messages )
