I agree to some extent, having also had an iPhone 3G beforehand.
That said, remember the iPhone's 2 previous incarnations? They were extremely limited - no MMS, no portrait typing, as well as a whole host of other things. I would liken that to 1.6 in some ways, except 1.6 is more customisable and more hands-on for those who want to get their hands dirty. Early adopters often bear the brunt of bugs and glitches remember - it comes with the territory. That said, look at the farce of the iPhone 4 - they either have to do a $1.5b recall, or spend $200m providing rubber bumpers for every phone. This is because it's a new model (like the streak), not a rehashed 3G or HTC semi-clone.
Paul's custom ROMs and the promise of 2.x in September are enough to keep me interested, hopefully understanding the nuances of the device by the time hopefully Froyo hits.
I too thought the same about the 3G thing until I did some research and realised the H is much faster!

What he said, I had an iPhone 2G in early 08, and it honestly did suck on the 1.x firmwares, crashes & hangs all over the shop. Wasn't til I jailbroke that things started to settle down, go figure.
Took til 2.0 to finally work as intended.
Way I see it, there's lots of little niggles with the streak, but no show stoppers, something that would make me return it to Dell...
