I will try and help with a few of your questions, anything that i've missed, i'm sure someone else will fill in the gaps.
Well I've had my Streak for the afternoon & evening now and after some initial worries, I'm really starting to like it...a lot. Fantastic, it's a great piece of kit.
It did help reading the manual (which I haven't finish reading yet) and in particular now knowing how to bring up the keyboard when there isn't an onscreen button for it was causing me problems.
I come from using a Nokia E71 and before that a HTC Tytn. On paper, the Streak seemed ideal for me and the phone I'd been waiting for for years. Now I have it, I would say that I would prefer it slightly larger. An extra inch would make all the difference (something me wife keeps going on about!). Any larger and this baby would not fit in your pocket.
I'm finding the virtual keyboard a problem. The keys are too small and too sensitive. I'm finding that I'm making mistakes with every word. I'm sure I'll improve, but I am a bit disappointed with the keyboard. Getting rid of the number pad and having larger buttons will help. I have the same problem with the keyboard and especially the numpad, there is a webchat happening on Monday with a guy from Dell and were hoping this question can be put to the developers, i would prefer an option to have a full qwerty with no numpad, this would enable the extra space to make the keys a little larger, perhaps they could fit an option with the next release of android 2.2 for the Streak.
I hope the reliability is okay. After just two hours, it wouldn't turn on or off and I had to remove the battery to get it back on again. Since then it has been fine. This may of just been a glitch, but keep an eye on the battery cover, sometime the fitting of this can cause problems, if it becomes loose the Dell will turn off, in your case with the Dell not turning off, was probably just a software glitch.
I'm using a Three SIM. Three network coverage is excellent where I live and all 2G networks are too weak to be usable. Anyone else using the Streak on Three yet? I'm on O2, with no problems.
A few basics I need some help on:
Do you need to close down applications? Or what is the proper method of exiting when you have finished with an app? Is just hitting the back or home key correct? There are not exit buttons for a lot of the items, you can download "Advanced App Killer" free from the Android Market, install as a shortcut, this will kill all apps that you want to kill, I use mine a couple of times a day, this gives me nearly 2 days use with one battery, using a selection of 3G while out and about, and wifi in the house.
The list of "Recent Applications" when you hold down the Home key - is this recently run apps or apps still running? I assume they are all still running as they return to where you left. It is a list of recently run apps, but some of these may still be running, "Advanced App Killer" will help you manage those that are still running.
When at home and on WiFi, does all data default to WiFi? I can't turn off my 3G as this is used for calls on Three. Does WiFi always take priority if a connection exists. When i turn on my wifi, all data reverts to wifi as it is a stronger signal.
When making a call, I want to call up a contact, but it seems long winded. Is there a way of just starting to type the name from the main phone screen (without going to Contacts, then bringing up the keyboard)? yes, keep your finger on the "menu" button until the keyboard appears, just type in the first couple of letters of the contacts name and then either phone or text as usual.
The messages screen seem awkward. Isn't there an inbox, outbox, drafts etc? not that i have come across.
The calendar week view is poor as it doesn't show the event text until you click on it. It's pretty useless just seeing coloured boxes with no text! I normally use the week view all the time on my PC (GoogleCal) and I'm having to use the Agenda view on the phone. Any way to fix this? I have personally tried a few different calendars from Android market, haven't found anything decent as yet, it would be great if we could have something like the iphone calendar, easy to use, nice to look at, and does exactly as it says on the tin, maybe this could be a question to the developers.
