Default Battery charging stopped with Ipod Nano connected ... - 03-10-2011, 03:52 PM

Hi

Since upgrading to 2.2 I've had a few issues with my Dell STreak and charging its battery. Every now and then I get the message about abnormal battery temperature and charging cancelled. That seems to have gone away but i never knew why it happened.

The other issue is that I cannot charge my streak whilst my Ipod Nano i charging from the PC at the same time. The ipod nano is attached via a USB charging cable whilst the Streak is sitting in the official Dell cradle and receiving its power from the mains supply. If I plug the ipod in then the charging actually stops. If the ipod is already plugged in and I sit the Streak into the cradle then I get a 'Unknown USB device is not recognised' message on my PC.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am going to make a wild guess here that the Dell dock is also plugged into your computer via USB, that for some reason the dock is actually charging from the usb rather than the wall charger when both are connected and that your PC doesn't provide the proper minimum current to the usb port when both items are plugged in.

If I am right then you may be able to fix this IF your PC has more than one USB controller built in. If you have more than two usb ports move the connecting cable of one of the devices to another USB port and see if the same thing happens.

I am thinking that there may be an internal switch on the Dell dock that 'prefers' the connection to the USB port when the USB cable is plugged in and that it not sophisticated enough to switch to the mains charger if the USB current is too low. I further speculate that the switching is done to prevent charging from both sources and that the USB is 'preferred' so that you can transfer data while charging.

Edit: or your Streak could be allergic to Apples.

Damn, I hadn't considered the fact that it wouldn't be charging from the wall charger ...

I unplugged the USB cable and the streak stopped charging instantly, even though the wall charger was still connected. Its my office PC so there isn't really room to start maneuvering things around to different ports (mainly cos I really can't be bothered to start clearing access to the back of the PC). But at least I now know its the old chestnut of too many USB accessories being attached to a low power PSU.

Thanks for the help Marvin02.

You could try a "powered USB hub". A 7-port USB hub is guaranteed to have it's own power supply, but you can find smaller ones, too.

Ideally, you'd borrow one to test... before you buy

Mini 9 | Intel 5100 Wifi | Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

Twitchy,

You're welcome.

A powered hub should solve the problem as reflex says
