Seems my neighbours (or their devices) do a reasonable job of spreading their presence across the available channels, there's a couple not showing that would appear/disappear during the day (I guess they're afraid of the 'always on' nature of broadband / wireless), but you can see how if they weren't it could be easy for some hotspots to build up. Channel 6 gets busy at times with 4 or so on it at once.
I don't consider where I live to have a high concentration of networks though, some other more built up and technically inclined areas may be able to paint a prettier rainbow than this, where it'd be more important.
(Pic taken from wifi analyzer, has a built-in 'snapshot' taker for some of its views - since telling my router to just provide wireless G and drop B it's producing double signals).
/boggle at the unsecured network provider you located though. Even if I didn't have security on mine (naturally I do), there's still a username/password challenge on the router config too.

And normally you find no security means default username and password set . I think each wireless router sold should come with security turned on as standard and a random username and password for them on a card within the box
