"JuiceDefender" seem to be the most popular with 3 million users.

You will never find an app. where there is universal acclaim about effectiveness.

Seems that on some phones, some apps. work better than others, and users, are unsure whether an app. makes there phone run slower, or consumes more power than before.

Thanks Australian for the advice! Since this is a new adventure for me, I was wondering if there is a good list of apps for a novice to start with?

Not that I am aware of, but we do always recommend that the first app. should be an anti virus one.

I think several are a good. They check all the apps. you download to ensure they are clean.

I use "Anti Virus Free", "BitDefender" and "Webroot". The latter two are also major players in PC anti virus products.

I think the apps. mentioned on this forum are pretty good.

Make sure you do not download any apps. that are not from the Android Market.

It has been proven, that many contain malware & viruses.

When you use the Market, read the comments made by users, and take ones well recommended.

Don't be the only person to download a new app. - make sure others have made good comments.

You will almost certainly want Google Plus (Huddle), it is quite revolutionary, but whilst you can download it now, we are waiting for Google to finally release it soon, after continuing development. The release is due any day now.

Skype might be a good one, but some think that general camera special effect apps, may have left their camera with less sharpness than before (after they deleted it). You know how things are after you make a change, = you are unsure. Anyhow I avoid them. Not that Skype or Tango similar video calling apps. are likely to do that.

You will normally select you apps. on the Market via your PC and download them from the PC - which delivers them to your phone installed.

So, you must have a Google account, and I think it a good idea to get a Google Gmail address as you default address for your Streak.

Everything works better when you synch everything by going totally Google.

You will then be able to go on all google sites (e.g) YouTube with that email address.

You should also download the Apps. - "Tubemate" to save YouTube videos to your phone.

"ACcleaner" to clear your apps caches, periodically to get back memory space.

"Opera" as browser, as it reduces web content to suit mobile devices, and it is easy to clear history and bookmark sites with, via the Menu button on your device.

Bookmark "IPQuick" (search for it) search engine in Opera, as it keeps no records of your usage, unlike Google, etc.

You might want a "History Eraser", but select the one with the icon of a waste paper basket. The other has too many strange permissions.

"KiiSafe"" is a secret vault on your phone to which you can move photos and videos from the Gallery. They can only be viewed via a 6 digit pin number (your birth date perhaps in reverse).

"Fast Reboot" in case you have freeze ups with Gallery videos, or other glitches.

"Pinnacle" is an app. that allows you to lock (secure) any other apps. so they can't be used by anyone else. You could include "KiiSafe", which doesn't really need inclusion, unless you have a file manager app - which might allow access to your SD card contents and show the contents of KiiSafe.

When you have "Pinnacle", your selected apps. can only be opened with a 6 digit pass code.

Do NOT choose "Vaulty" as an alternative to "Pinnacle".
