Thumbs up Chess Free - 04-16-2011, 07:54 AM

I am not really into games, and have downloaded only a few apps. to show people, should they ask about them.

But this one, "Chess Free" seems to be a game that could easily have been a paid for app.

So, whilst in your conveyance for getting to work, - as long as you are not driving, you can play chess against your Streak, or is it yourself?

The timeless game of intellectual warfare. Are you a grand master in the making?Chess Free is the best free Chess game on Android!
It is currently the highest rated free chess on Android (at time of writing), from the 30+ free chess programs listed.
********-- rating!: "Chess Free provides a rich and challenging experience of this classic board game, all within the confines of your Android smart-phone. " James Woodcock : Review Journalist (

-- 10 play levels (Novice->Expert)
This uses intelligent weakening for lower levels. Good for beginners.
-- Uses Treebeard Chess engine
(as used in Microsoft's MSN Chess). This has a unique "human-like" style.

-- "Show CPU Thinking" option
A unique feature, great for learning chess. This shows which moves the AI is considering.
-- Chess Stats, Timers, Hints and Handicaps
Track your career history against each level and improve your rating
-- 2 player hot-seat
Play against your friends!
-- 3 Chess Board colors and 3 Chess Piece Sets

-- Review game mode
Step back through your game and see how you won!
-- Designed for both Tablet and Phone
-- Full Touch screen and trackball support
Coming soon! PGN support for save/load of games.

So, there you have it. And as usual, I don't advise about apps. that do not have lots of happy users who write ringing endorsements of the app.

That is a great chess app, but I ended up going with this one because of one feature it has that I didn't see on the one you mentioned: the ability to change the chess engine. For many the engine may not seem to be a big deal, but for others changing the engine changes the challenge because different engines have different openings and strategies. For more about this, see here.

Looks impressive, Strephon.

I didn't realize there were that many Chess applications.

It does look the better of the two.
