The Help option from within marketplace takes you here:
Android Market Help
It's worth checking what it has to offer before you pass judgement. See if it can give you any ideas:
Can't find applications - Android Market Help
Paid App Availability - Android Market Help
Paid Apps category missing from market!!! - Android Market Help
(Note: entry above isn't answered yet, but it may be worth you watching its progress or adding in your own 2c too, it has an option to subscribe to it for updates)
Sony Ericsson X10 Experia - problem with Android Market - Android Market Help
(Contains some info on where to check or repopulate the Google account settings in an answer given)
There's likely others too. Hope it is of some help.

You could look into changing your build.prop, apparently changing the the nexus one build.prop enabled full market access for those with the unrecognised leaked 2.1 update.

Thanks to everyone, after reading the linked threads, it turns out Purchasing apps is allowed on a very few specific countries... which is extremely dumb I think.
Currently that would mean, if I write an app for the local market with local language etc, I cant sell it even if I wanted it? lol.
Anyway after that, I figured out why Market Enabled didnt work at first - lol I am still not used to not only select the option, but hold it until the menu pops up to actually change it... I was sure highlighting the option and then clicking back works, like it does in Settings menues for example.
I must say I dont like this non-consistent Android UI behaviour.
