Default What USB drive or SD-card? - 11-12-2011, 09:39 PM

I migrated /Users/me from the internal 8Gb to an USB thumb drive (a very small Platinum with 6/16 Mb/s w/r-speed, bought for size, not for speed).
Now, it is painfully slow, way slower than previously using the internal SSD.

Would a faster USB-drive or SD-Card be markedly better? What speed? Is the USB-port and card reader hardware fast enough not to be the bottleneck here? any experiences?

No, a USB drive will be slow regardless of brand.

The SD card slot isn't bootable on the mini 9 so be careful what you move there. I think I remember reading here long ago that the SD card is on the same bus as the USB anyway.

If it was me, I would get a larger SSD.

Default Partition your SD Card and mod the FSTAB - 11-15-2011, 03:25 PM

Have a look at my thread here: Mounting a SDHC card to /Users via fstab

I've had /Users and /Applications mounted as separate partitions on my sdcard for years. Never had a problem with it, but my mini is mainly used for Skype and web browsing.
