A Super Talent 16 GB can be had for around $55.00 US or so and
A Super Talent 32 GB for around $114.00 US.
BTW, a full install of SL 10.6.0 will fit on a STEC 8 GB drive with the mini 9,
however updates to later versions of SL start eating up memory. If you start with a 16 GB SSD and 10.6.0 and sequentially update 10.6.1, 10.6.2, etc you will quickly fill the 16 GB SSD by the time you are approaching 10.6.7
I've had good luck on EBay for SSD's.

I've got 10.6.0 on my 8GB at the moment but its not left me with much space. I've been looking at 32GB for exactly the reason you said, I think I will rapidly fill a 16GB.

The runcore 32GB is bloody expensive hence why I was looking at the super talent.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how I should be going about updating OSX? Theres so many guides and I'm not sure which to use? I did the install using usb & netbookinstaller as per macdrews guide.

1-download and install special nbi 20100616212351 (see signature link)
2-go to apple web site: Apple - Support - Downloads
3. look in the "search downloads" area and type in what you want, i.e.
10.6.1, hit search downloads and you will be directed to Mac osx v.10.6.1 update...
4. not sure about this, some people have gone directly to 10.6.6 but I went one update at a time. Also, you will fill your ssd quickly going above 10.6.0 if using a 16 GB ssd

I have an original 16GB SSD in my Mini 9. After doing something stupid recently (3am experimental Bluetooth kext edit which really hosed my system), I ended up deciding to wipe everything completely and start totally fresh. I've got an 8GB USB drive I keep in my netbook bag as a "system restore" key. It boots the original 10.6.0 retail image, with NetbookInstaller implemented. Once OSX is installed (don't forget to uncheck all the unneeded stuff in setup, like printer drivers / language translations) and booted, I run the 10.6.7 combo update (also on my restore key), then NBI again before rebooting. Set a few preferences, restore my Firefox profile, enable sleep in terminal, and everything's just perfect. After putting back a gig or two worth of data this time, I have 4.39GB free. That's plenty for me.

Everyone should really have something like this restore key around, just like keeping your Windows CD with your laptop. If something goes haywire, you're not pulling your hair out for days or weeks, cruising forums and trying to remember everything

Like CharredPC, I too have a restore USB thumb drive from which I can quickly do a complete reinstall. It's just a good idea to have something like this.

However, another alternative is to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a working copy of your current OS X install onto a 16 GB USB thumb drive. If you then copy Carbon Copy Cloner onto the same thumb drive, then if anything goes wrong you'd be able to boot from the thumb drive and use the Carbon Copy Cloner on the thumb drive to clone the OS X image on the thumb drive back onto your SSD. This will allow you to quickly restore your entire OS X install without having to rerun a combo update and NBI.

I have a 10.6.0 on my Del Mini 9 right now, which I installed using Netbook Bootmaker. It runs fine, no complaints. I want to update to 10.6.7, but always botch everything up when I do. Here's what I've been doing:

Download and run Netbook Installer (20100616212361) on my Dell mini;
Click "software updates";
Restart the computer -- am now unable to boot up. Do a new install of 10.6. Aahh!

Any advice? Where am I going wrong?

Install 10.6.0 using NBM/NBI 0.8.4 RC1, then do incremental updates to 10.6.3 using the same NBI. Download them from Apple.

For 10.6.4 to 10.6.7 use NBI 351 from the 10.6.4 update thread.

If you try and update using Software Update it will try and load 10.6.8.
